Track by score AND page visitation

Apr 10, 2014

Hello Everyone,

I've tried searching through the forums for this and while I've found topics about either score or visitation tracking I have yet to come across a solution for both.

We're putting together some courses and I've hit a bit of a snag.  I need to be able to track completions based on scoring criteria OR page visitation.

LMS is configured to track completions based on a test score of 80% or the learner paging through all topics.

In Articulate publishing options (both Storyline and Presenter) it's a radio button to choose one or the other, I can't pick both which is what I need.

If I publish the course to just look at page visitation, the course completes, but no score is sent to the LMS for the learner record.

If I publish the course to look at the score, I can get the completion BUT only if the user scores the 80% or higher, if the learner fails the assessment by scoring under 80% the course will be stuck in an "in progress" status.  I could allow multiple attempts on the quiz, but there's multiple issues with that.

1) Allowing a user to take a quiz repeatedly until they pass doesn't really demonstrate that they've learned the subject, they're just able to finally get the right answers through process of elimination.

2) In order to identify trends through quiz attempt analysis we won't be able to see how many times they tried to take the quiz before passing.

Any suggestions on how to address this gap?  Thanks!

If your LMS is scorn compliant it should allow you to pass completed from slides viewed.  As you have found the options is an either/or situation.

As a workaround you could add a hidden question and results slide at the end of the course and use triggers to select the correct answer and jump over both slides and then use this to set completion in your LMS

Hi Phil, thanks for the info.  So the LMS definitely is SCORM compliant (it's Skillsoft's product) however, I think it's actually an issue with the course because when I publish, I can only pick to track by viewing all slides or by the quiz results.

And that's where I run in to the problem I have when someone fails the assessment, and I think that would apply to your work around as well.  If I were to set the score criteria to 80%, if they don't score 80% or higher, they won't be able to complete the course it'll just be stuck as in progress.  Now I've raised to this to the LMS product team as an issue because you should still be able to technically complete a course but fail it.  Then you can restart it and go through the whole thing again as a 2nd attempt, but that's not going to be changed any time soon.

I recently switched away from using Captivate, and I know that in Captivate I could communicate both the score and 100% page visitation information to the LMS and they work fine.  But I haven't been able to figure it out with Articulate published courses (Storyline or Presenter '13).  Any other ideas?
