Trouble with videos pausing in Presenter

Oct 24, 2012

 Hi there,

I have several courses that consist of videos and quizmaker assessments. Some of the videos are inserted directly onto slides, and others are included in the tabs of an engage interaction. The videos are all .flv, all conform to the Articulate recommended video specifications, and the longest one is 5 min.

When I publish the courses and upload them to an LMS, there are severe and frequent pauses in the videos.

Any suggestions about how to improve the video performance?

Many thanks,

Ange

Good Afternoon, Ange.

I think the first step is to isolate whether the problem is with your LMS or with your Presenter output.  My favorite way to do that is to compare the performance of my content at SCORM Cloud.

If you find that your videos continue to perform poorly at SCORM Cloud, I would recommend creating an Articulate package of your course, and then uploading the zip file via a support case so that we can take a look.

If performance is no longer an issue at SCORM Cloud, then you know that you need to discuss the performance issues with your LMS provider.

Please let us know if you need anything else.  Thanks!

Thanks so much for your response Justin. The course plays perfectly in SCORM Cloud, so the probably seems to be within the LMS (although our provider is adamant that there is nothing they can do!).

I know that Articulate does not support pre-loaders, but do you think it might help in this situation?

Does anyone have experience with pre-loaders? Or other recommendations?

Thanks!

Good Morning, Ange.

I'm glad you've narrowed down the problem a bit.  Gerry has suggested some really neat ideas in this Forum Thread for how to compensate for lousy video caching on the iPad.  Perhaps a similar idea might help in your situation?

In addition, it looks like preloading has been a popular topic here in the community:

  • Brian provides a really nice overview in this old Forum Thread
  • Phil authored a guest blog post on the topic here
  • You'll find information here and here on a third-party preloader that has been made available for sale (but that is unsupported by Articulate)

Please let us know if you need anything else.  Thanks!
