Multiple attempts on a quiz & learner's experience

Feb 07, 2013

Hello!

I've gone through the tutorials and have a few of outstanding questions:

1. I have set a quiz to allow for 3 attempts on a quiz. The quiz is on the last slide of the Presenter course. What does the learner experience if they do not pass the quiz on the 3rd attempt? Are they "locked out" of the course?

2. Since I have specified 3 potential attempts, will the score for each attempt be recorded and visible?

3. I'd like the end result to be that unless the learner passes the quiz at the end of the course, the course itself is not considered complete. Where/how do I set that up or does it work that way by default?

I appreciate your help!

Hi Carla!

1.)  What this basically does is allows the user to go back and attempt the quiz three times. After the third attempt, if they've still failed, they won't be able to try the quiz again. If they get the correct answer/response and pass on their first attempt, for example, they'll only see that they've passed. They won't be prompted to try again. Here's a quick little example.

2. and possibly 3.) The score that's recorded will the last attempt. So, if the user picks the right answer on the very first try, this will be recorded. If the user selects the wrong answer twice, but selects the correct answer the third time, this is what's recorded. If the user never selects the right answer, the failed result will be recorded.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for responding so quickly. In the case of a T/F quiz, I can see where the learner would just try the other answer until they get it right. I'm still a little confused on if the learner doesn't pass the quiz on the 3rd time. Does the course exit, does the screen become unresponsive?

Right now when a learner fails a quiz, the trainer calls them give them some tips in terms of focusing, not mulit-tasking, quiet environment etc then I can go in and remove  test attempt(s) allowing the learner another shot. (Currently our tests are programmed separately in the LMS rather than being embedded in the course) How will this work with the quiz embedded in the course?

Finally, where does the actual score get recorded so that I can see the learner's score? I took my course with the embedded test and posted it on a test site on our LMS. When the course was completed and the test passed the training record didn't show a score? I hoped that the score would be recorded so that the learner's trainer, manager etc could access it beyond the learner seeing it on the results page.

I appreciate your help!

Hi Carla,

For your question about failing on the third attempt:

It really depends on how you have the quiz and presentation set up. After the third attempt, usually, most courses are designed to show the results slide. If the user failed, they would see a results slide that displays their scoring information and whether they passed or failed. How the quiz behaves from here really depends on whether you have it in a Presenter presentation, or if you have the quiz running as a standalone quiz. If it's a standalone quiz, the user will see the result slide and if this is the last portion of the course, the user can close the window after finishing. Now, if you have the quiz inserted into a Presenter presentation, you'll have more options for what happens after the quiz is completed.

If you're trying to limit the attempts, but want to allow additional attempts after speaking with a trainer (which by the way, is an excellent idea!), you may run into some issues here. One thing you could do is assign new login credentials or reset their information on the LMS (I don't know how simple that would be - I believe that would depend on your LMS). The reason you'll want to do this is because the quiz will be seen as completed (even if they failed) if there are limited attempts and the quiz is standalone they may not be able to retry if the data is saved.

The data is passed to the LMS for scoring:

The following quiz data is sent to your LMS by Quizmaker ’09 via SCORM or AICC with each question:

  • id:  This is the number of the question in the quiz.  It will be in the format Question#_#.  The first '#' is the question number.  The second '#' is the number of the user's attempt.  For example, Question5_2 would designate the user's second attempt on the fifth question.
  • type:  This is the type of question (True/False, Multiple Choice, Multiple Response, etc).
  • student_response:  This is how the user answered the question.
  • correct_responses:  This is the correct answer for the question.
  • result:  This designates whether the user answered the question correctly or not.
  • weighting:  Articulate content does not currently utilize this item.  It will always be set to 1.
  • latency:  This is how long it took the user to answer the question.
  • objective:  Articulate content does not currently utilize this item.  It will always be set to 0.

SCORM 2004 content will also communicate the question text to an LMS.

I hope this answers at least some of your questions If you need any further information, of if I wasn't clear enough, please let me know!

Thanks!

Christine

We're dealing with something similar, and would appreciate any thoughts.

The quiz is set to be taken up to three times to pass. If it is not passed by that third attempt, then it is a "fail" and should be recorded as such.

But it seems that when a user takes the quiz and fails, then clicks Retry and passes it, the LMS has already received the data from the first 'failed' attempt and marked that activity as a 'fail'. Since the quiz is key to passing the actual course in the LMS, that failed first attempt at the quiz results in the LMS recording the class as a failure.

It seems the Quiz is sending the 'fail' SCORM data to the LMS even though we've set the Quiz to be retaken three times.

Any thoughts??

Thanks,

John

Good morning John!

Have you tested your course in SCORM Cloud? This would help us determine if the issue is Articulate related or if it's on your LMS's side. If you're using AICC content please take a look at the article below for testing information:

Articulate Support - Testing AICC content at SCORM Cloud

If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on.

If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team.

The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues.

Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks!

I'm working in Articulate 13:

I create a quiz in Quizmaker and then inserted the quiz in Presenter.  I have set the quiz to allow for 3 attempts.   I SCORM the file and upload the package  into our LMS (ComplianceWire).  I want the learner to received a failed status and then contact the admin to re-assign.

We are not getting this failed status.  Any suggestions on how?

I appreciate your help!

Hi Nancy and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Sorry to hear that you've run into an issue with your status in your LMS.

Curious how you have your Reporting Status set for your LMS?

Are you able to replicate this behavior in SCORM Cloud or is it limited to your LMS?

Would you be able to share your Articulate Package for us to take a look?
