Effects in Replay

Feb 28, 2014

Hello!

I had thought that Replay would allow me to create screencasts similar to what I create in Storyline. For instance, in Storyline, when I record (and send to screen-by-screen), text boxes and clicks are automatically generated, at which point I just quickly edit them.

I notice this didn't happen in Replay and I've searched everywhere to figure out how to turn it on. A screencast isn't useful for us unless we can add those effects, and then save out to MP4.

What am I missing?

Thank you!!!

Hi Michelle, Replay does not work the same way as the screencasts in Storyline. When you record a step-by-step screencast in Storyline, you are getting a video in the background. The callouts, cursor animations, highlights, and hotspots are not part of the video. They just sit on top of the video in the Storyline timeline. This is intentional as it allows us to manipulate these objects on the timeline. The downside is that when you try and export the video you do not get all the stuff that sits on top of it.

With Replay, you are just doing a video recording. The intent was more that you could record your screen along with a presenter and show the screen demo and the presenter in a split panel.

To get around your particular dilemma, I would recommend developing your step-by-step screen recordings in Storyline and then use Replay to record the published output. It is an extra step or 2 but it will save you the cost of having to purchase Camtasia or Captivate.

I've noticed many people on the forums have requested (officially feature requested) the Publish to MP4 feature in Storyline. With that much need, I'm surprised it hasn't made it into an update yet. I know that we're now going back to Captivate (we own both at this point), because as much as we hate that software, it publishes to the file formats we need to make interactive PDFs with embedded MP4s.
