Accessibility: Player transcript Widget

Jan 31, 2024

I have a question about accessibility and the transcript button. Now when you add cc, there is an option for transcript and a widget that highlights the segments as the audio or narration is spoken.  My question is - has this been tested with screen readers?  For example, what stops a screen reader from reading the transcript at the same time the video is playing (and the transcript  is open in the right column)? Or does it?

I know if you have a video and cannot have both the video and transcript on the same page.  I really like the idea of the transcript button but has it been tested with a screen reader?

Thanks

Hi Nancy,

Once the user activates the video and it starts playing, the only way the transcript would play over the video is if the user intended it to. They'd have to tab to the transcript button on the player control and open it (by default a screen reader identifies the transcript button as "not pressed"), then tab to the items in the transcript list and activate them. If they did do these keystrokes they'd be bypassing the mute button for the video which they could toggle, if for some reason they wanted to hear the transcript via the screen reader as opposed to the actual audio in the video.
