Anchor test answers, submit button functionality on results slide

Aug 18, 2014

Hello:

How do I anchor a test answer choice (like pinning 'all of the above' to the bottom of the list)? I know the process from QuizMaker, but Storyline does not seem to work that way. Is this no longer possible, or am I just not doing the right things to make it work?

Also, the Submit button is not working right on the results slide. Whether passing or failing the test clicking the Submit button brings up a pop-up saying Invalid Answer and that you must complete the question before submitting (see example screenshot). I would ideally like the Submit button to close the course and transmit progress to the LMS for a passing result, and re-direct them to the start of the course for a failing score. is this possible? The developer on this course built each question individually (each on it's own slide) which I have not seen before. Could this be messing with the submit button? How do I get it to work the way I describe, or if not possible, how do I at least get it to not pop-up the Invalid Answer thing and work like normal?

Hi Mike,

In regards to the answer order, you would want to set up the quiz so that the answers were not shuffled and then you could determine the order of how they're listed based on how you enter them into the question editor.

As far as the "submit" button - did he make this results slide as a standard results slide or set it up on his own? The submit button would not normally be included as that's just for question slides. You could remove it by looking at the slide properties (the little cog icon) and you should see an option there to "uncheck" the submit button. I'd suggest adding in the "next" button to allow users to know that is the way to advance. You'll need to set up the triggers if you'd like it to do something other than jump to the next slide - although I don't believe you'll be able to set it to either close the course or restart it. You could disable the functionality of the next button if the user didn't pass though, similar to the description here of how to disable the next button until the user interacts with all elements, just with the condition that they're score meets the passing points. I did also want to point out that the "exit course" trigger has some known issues that may cause it to not work as expected, so you'll want to review those and fully test in your LMS before deploying.

Good info, thank you.

I don't see the point of a next button on this screen at all. This is the last page of the course. Either they passed the test and they close the course (using the submit button in most of our other courses), or they don't pass and they should be routed back to the beginning of the course. Are you saying to set up basically a 'dummy' slide on the next screen if I want a submit button to close the course? This sounds like a waste of space and of the user's time. I would have to basically duplicate info on the next slide (either pass and close course, or fail and restart course). Is this functionality not available from the results slide itself?

I am a little baffled with the way some of the features work (or don't) in Storyline. I have noticed several key features that were 'removed' for the Storyline product, such as the anchoring option, the course duration display, etc.

Anyway, I guess I can remove the 'official' submit button and just make my own button that only appears on the pass results and set it to close the course, but I don't see why the submit button is working this way. It is a slide-level button, and it is a results slide where there are no questions. Why is it even thinking that a test question needs to be attached and/or answered?

Hi Mike,

I'm not certain why there is a "submit" button on your results slide - as it's not generally there by default. By default the previous and next buttons are typically there. You mentioned another developer setting this up - so he/she may have intended something else for the submit button, as even though you can enable it for each slide within the slide properties it's designed for quiz questions.

As for what you could set up on the results slide - you can associated triggers with the submit button or next button instead of the default "submit interaction" or "jump to next slide." Your other idea to remove that button from the player on that slide and add in your own custom button for the results slide - which would only appear on the Success layer is also a great method.

In regards to "missing" features, Storyline is an entirely different product than Studio and therefore has a set of different features. You can see a comparison of them here to help determine when or which to use based on needs. You can also share any thoughts on features you'd like to see directly with our product development team by submitting it as a feature request.

Hope that helps, and if you're still running into difficulty it may be best to share a copy of your .story file here with us so that we can take a look at what's happening.

So let me see if I understand your anchor function. You had this feature in Articulate Studio 09. Then, knowing many Studio users would upgrade to StoryLine, you decided to eliminate the feature?  Or did you guys just not catch this error and you owe your customers a "mea culpa" at minimum?

The better solution would have been to restore functionality of course. A YEAR ago when this thread was opened!!! Thanks guys.
