Creating fill-in-the-blank question with multiple correct answers

May 02, 2014

We are trying to create a fill-in-the-blank question that has multiple possible answers to cover more than one correct response.  We've reviewed the second Screenr on this page and followed her steps:

Normal 0 false false false oNotPromoteQF /> EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/how-to-evaluate-multiple-fill-in-the-blanks-on-the-same-slide

However, when the submit button is selected we get the message:  "Invalid answer.  You must complete the question before submitting."  Is there a step missing from the Screenr?  Or has something been updated in Storyline since the Screenr was created 2 years ago?

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Hi Cindy,

You can share your project by attaching your .story file to your response. To do so, click on the small paperclip icon when responding. You'll be able to locate the file and upload it to the thread.

Please keep in mind that if your file is too large, it may not upload. Usually, the forums work best with files under 20 MB. If the file is larger than this, it might be best to pull the content you want to share into a new file

Let us know if you have any trouble with this.

Thanks!

Hi Cindy,

So, I ended up starting from scratch with the triggers and variables in your slide - I hope you don't mind!

I changed this so that the variable for the state change actually occurs when the text entry variable changes, rather than when the learner clicks on the "Submit" button.

You'll also notice that the order of triggers is a little different. The triggers I created are now on the slide level, versus being attached to the player triggers - this is because they were originally tied to the "Submit" button.

The problem with tying them to the "Submit" button is that they're not adjusting before the learner clicks on submit.

You should be able to recreate the triggers and variables I used for your other characters, and simply add to the conditions on the "Correct" button. However, if you have any trouble with this, just holler! :)

Unfortunately that didn't quite fix the problem.  If I enter Wilma's name first, then Fred, I get the "Correct!" response.  However, if I enter Fred's name first, then Wilma, I get the "Invalid Answer' response.  Does it have anything to do with the way this trigger is written?

Please let me know if I need to upload the interaction again.  Thank you!

Hi Cindy,

Sorry about that! I forgot to add the second trigger. You'll need it for both the Fred and Wilma variable changes for the state of the button in order to allow learners to enter in any order.

This is also why I mentioned that you'll want to add this for each of the other options - I simply forgot to add it :) Opps!

I added that trigger and also added "Dino" so you can see how all three need to be adjusted and added to the conditions. This should allow for any order of entry in the text entry fields.

I hope this helps!
