Appearent bugs in pick one quiz slide

Jan 30, 2014

I am finding that if you choose the "edit Pick One" question, make changes and then save it, it is adding triggers in the Correct and Incorrect layers to hide the layer at the end of the timeline and another to go to the next slide in the presentation!

It also reverts the font in the review layer back to Articulate. I have the font set to Arial Unicode MS as the default because of the translations that must be done later.

I duplicate an earlier slide, then have to make changes like which is the correct answer and these changes occur.

Why is there an option to score by choice in pick one, if only one is correct? I really need this in the pick many so I can have multiple correct answers.

But I am still having fun anyway!

Hi there Rick,

First, I wanted to address this comment:

"But I am still having fun anyway!"

That's always awesome to hear! Very glad that you're still enjoying Storyline, even if you've run into some trouble.

For your other comments:

I am finding that if you choose the "edit Pick One" question, make changes and then save it, it is adding triggers in the Correct and Incorrect layers to hide the layer at the end of the timeline and another to go to the next slide in the presentation!

When you first create a freeform "Pick One" quiz, there are no feedback layers. Once you've inserted your shapes and edited your quiz (to select the shapes, answers, etc.), those feedback layers are created if you have content/text provided for the incorrect and correct feedback.

However, the triggers that are added to these layers should be set to hide when the user clicks on the "Continue" button - this and the option to jump to the next slide are by design. I'm not sure if this is what you're seeing, though. Are your triggers actually set to close when the timeline ends? I'm not able to reproduce this on my end.

It also reverts the font in the review layer back to Articulate. I have the font set to Arial Unicode MS as the default because of the translations that must be done later.

I just tried this out and added post review text to a "Pick One" - I then went into the "Review" layer and changed the font style and size. Opening the edit options for the quiz didn't change the font for me. I went back in and removed the text from the post review field and saved - when I go back to the "Review" layer, my formatting is still applied.

Why is there an option to score by choice in pick one, if only one is correct? I really need this in the pick many so I can have multiple correct answers.

In a Pick One, you're given the option to score by choice, yes - it is a little odd and I've seen that come up before on the forums. Personally, I think it's because you can select a wrong answer - if you select the correct answer you get points - if not, you do not. This way, developers have the option of providing an additional choice on the slide and learners have the option to select either just the correct answer, or pick between two answers - one of them being incorrect. I don't think it's actually intended for multiple correct answers - as there should only be one.

Now, back to the problems - it looks like you're experiencing a couple of strange issues from what you described. Please make sure that you're working with a local project file when you modify or publish your project. If you're working on a network drive, or any other external storage, that might be causing the trouble.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Please also make sure you're running the most recent version of Storyline. Articulate Storyline Update 5 is now available. It includes bug fixes, performance improvements, and HTML5 output enhancements. Click here for details.

Let me know if you still have trouble with these.

Thanks! :)

Thanks for the detailed reply Christine.

I am working right off my C: drive, so no network problems should be involved here.

As for the font change, I can't seem to duplicate it again. I had duplicated some slides as I change from true/false slides I did not like and moved to the Pick One option so I could use the agree and diagree buttons rather than the radio buttons for true/false.

Then I created a review layer to explain why the suggested solution was good or bad. The continue button closes that layer and opens the Review layer. from there I have another continue button to go to the next slide.

I have the same setup for the Pick Many quiz slide, except I called it a results layer. Here there are 3 suggested solutions and some are correct and some aren't. I needed to give feedback on each of the three choices since the scoring forces them to get all three right or no points! I really wanted badly here to award points for each of the three different answer options, like 30 each for a total of 90 points for that slide. I did not want to continue with one slide at a time. I also wanted to have negative points as a possibility to enhance the feel of a game more. I had it all working with variables and triggers, but that won't work within the LMS for reporting.

I guess if I gave the results on the next slide rather than a layer, it would work more in the way you described the design.

I uploaded the file here that is still a long way from finished. The second scene is the first draft and the starting scene is using the pick one and pick many options.

Thanks for the quick reply and help!

Hi Rick!

I'm happy to hear that you're not able to reproduce the font change - that's a good sign that it may not be a bug, but simply a one-time issue. I wonder if maybe there was a problem caused by duplicating the slides? Not sure, but if you do see this again, let me know.

My goodness! There was a lot more to that course than I expected from the file size. Well done! :)

I really like the way you have the characters communicating. You also did a great job reinforcing the correct answers when an incorrect response is selected - learners will probably really appreciate the explanation of why the answer was incorrect, instead of just telling them they answered incorrectly.

Same with the correct responses - explaining why the choice is correct really improves understanding.

Thanks for sharing that project, Rick! :)
