Arrow keys to navigate slides

May 07, 2015

Hello all,

Having an issue with using arrow keys (left and right) to navigate slides, and hoping someone here can help.

I've set the triggers correctly - and this function works fine in preview mode. However, when I publish to CD and open the project, the left/right keys don't behave as they do in preview mode. There is no response at all.

Has anyone come across this before, and if so, how did you go about correcting?

Many thanks,

Richard

The problem lies within the player after publishing. The arrow keys are used in the player to position your course content in the player window. Is there any way to fix this? It's already 4 years and I'm having the same problem over here. I don't want to change my keys since using arrows is very intuitive...

Hello, do I need to set up individual triggers on each slide to enable end users to use the left and right arrow keys to navigate slides or is this in-built functionality?

Also, I'm going to have a bunch of pop up screens with enter/start buttons etc. Will pressing the 'space' or 'enter' buttons hit these buttons in effect and close the layer pop up screens? Again, would I need to set this up or is it built-in?

Hi Emma,

Great questions!

Both of the functionalities you describe here would need to be set up as Key Press Triggers. You could set up a trigger that when a user presses Right on their keyboard. Here is how you can do this:

  • Double-click on the existing trigger that jumps to the next slide when the user clicks on next - this will open up the Trigger Wizard
  • Click on the 'When' drop-down (it will be displaying the default "User clicks") and select "User presses a key" - this will display a new field called 'Key:'
  • Place the cursor in this new field and press the actual key on your keyboard you want to assign the action to (in your example, press the right arrow button)

Let us know if you have any questions!

Hi

I'm trying to set it so it advances to next slide with a key, but the trigger options shows that it works only after the user clicks on and object which makes the whole point of using a keyboard to navigate redundant. Am I missing something? How do I remove the "after user clicks on..." condition?

Hi there, Terry!

That's a great question.

The When the user presses trigger is intended to allow learners to view the content on a slide before moving to the next one. Clicking includes tabbing through the course as well.

Storyline requires an object to know where the focus should be.

Here's a screenshot of the trigger I used, and a quick video demo.

Hi Vincent

I tryed to add arrow key as a trigger but the trigger wizard recognize the arrows keys as a numeric keys.

For example, this happen when i try to enter the right arrow button (i tested in three different computers and i checked the keyboard configurations).

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Patricio.

Thank you for reaching out!

Based on what you're sharing, my initial thought would be that the NumLock key is on (as it forces all the numeric keypad keys to be locked in number-only mode).

If that's not the case, I'd recommend sharing your file through a support case so we can investigate what's going on.
