Articulate - Ghost images appear in background on next slide/screen

Oct 11, 2016

Hi all,

I'm trying to get to the bottom of a strange issue and can't find anything similar in the forums.

At seemingly random points, "ghost" images from a slide won't disappear when we've moved to the next slide or even a different scene. Once they appear, they stay on throughout the course - we can't figure out how to get rid of them. Please see the attached screenshot.

This has been visible when we've published for web, but in an extremely inconsistent manner. Sometimes a slide will become a "ghost," but a few minutes later (on the same browser and computer, with the same path through the course) it won't.

Any suggestions for how to remove this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Emily,

I'm with Chris here - very bizarre behavior...but I guess Halloween is fast approaching? ;)

If you're able to share a copy of the .story file we can take a look at publishing it and seeing how it behaves for us. If you can't share here in the forums you can always send to our support engineers privately here.

Hi all -

Thanks for the speedy responses! Unfortunately I can't share the file in the forums since it's for a private client. I do have a working theory for what has caused the issue - I'd love feedback on whether others think it's a possibility.

As I went through the file again, I realized that the gray background in the slidemaster is set to be 50% transparent - and the "ghost" images seem to be about 50% grayed out.

I believe that there is some glitch causing certain slides not to disappear when they should, and that they are actually appearing beneath the slidemaster background as we move forward. I still have no idea what's causing it, and it happens so irregularly that I'm not certain how to definitively test it.

What do you all think - is this theory plausible?

Without being able to look at the file, we'll have to do some blind troubleshooting...

First I'd isolate the problem a little. You can check Walt's theory by running the published file on different computers in different environments - maybe run it on a laptop at home, for example, and see if you get the same results or if the problem goes away. Then you know if it is network related or not.

I would also see if I could find a pattern in when the problem occurs; Does it always occur consistently when leaving slide X? Or does it occur when leaving different slides? Or always when arriving at slide Y? Or always within any slide in scene Z?  Does it occur consistently when leaving that slide or slides or only sometimes? Or is it totally random on any slide or scene and never consistent?  If you can find a pattern then you might be able to pinpoint the problem.

I would examine the slide masters to see if there might be an issue there. How are the slide masters set up? What content do you have on the slide masters? Does the problem occur only on slides that use a particular slide layout?

If we still don't have some answers, then I would look at how you are using layers, and finally I would look at triggers to see what you are doing on each screen, especially if you can narrow the problem down to occurring on a specific slide or set of slides.

Hi Emily,

It looks like I didn't include the link for a private share with our Support Engineers so that's fixed here.  But Chris gave you some really good troubleshooting tips as well, and it looks like narrowing it down to those slide master elements is also key to the behavior so please keep us posted and let us know what you're able to determine.
