Articulate not auto playing in a Blackboard 9.1 SP9 Blank Page

May 01, 2013

I'm trying to develop an interactive spalsh screen for use in Blackboard 9.1 SP9. This involves adding the Articulate story.swf file using the Add Flash/Shockwave File option in Blackboards Blank Page component WYSIWYG. When I do this I get ERROR: Could not load the file 'story_content/data.swf message. I did some research and I'm using the latest Storyline product and I don't have realplayer installed. Can anyone please help.

Hi Michael, welcome!

I've never tested anything with Blackboard, but what stands out to me in your post, is that you're trying to upload only the .swf file. Even under normal circumstances, that will usually cause at least some content to fail.

Here's how we recommend publishing Storyline for use with LMS, and here's how we recommend sharing it.

As for Blackboard specifically, I found an article that mentions Presenter, but nothing related to Storyline.

You may want to try testing your course in SCORM Cloud to help us determine if the issue is Articulate-related or if it's on your LMS's side. If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on. If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team. The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues.

Good luck, Michael

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the response. Perhaps I should have been clearer. I'm not trying to upload just the swf. The following is my workflow:

1. I create the interactive presentation using Articulate.

2. I publish this presentation using the LMS optioin. I've also tries this using the WEB option and had the same results.

3. I upload the entire published folder with all its content into the Blackboard content collection system and apply appropriate permissions for sharing.

4. I then use the Blackboard blank page option to create a splash screen. This is where I have the problem. I have to point to the story.swf file and set it to auto run and loop to get a splash screen effect. I currently do this with Adobe Captivate but and it works but I want to use Articulate because of the ease of use and HTML5 support.

Please Note:

When I use this workflow with a thumbnail and hyperlink it to the swf file it works fine. Its when I try to get it to auto run within a Blackboard blank page that I get the error message referenced in my original post.

Thanks for the clarification, Michael.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help working on the Blackboard side of things, but have you tried searching the Blackboard forums for similar issues?

I'm hoping another member with Blackboard experience might be able to jump in and help out here...

Or do you think an iframe on your Blackboard blank page would work?

Hi Ann and welcome to Heroes,

As Peter mentioned previously, we won't be much help on the Blackboard side of things - so you may want to try reaching out to Michael directly and see if he's able to share what he was able to set up. You may want to look into the iFrame information that Peter previously shared as well - and you'll need some expertise with HTML coding.
