Audio doesn't play (sometimes)

Mar 03, 2014

I have a course with audio.  Has been playing fine during preview and then when I publish it sometimes the audio plays and sometimes it doesn't.

Have checked all my sound / volume elements and all ok.

If I go into a slide and click the audio file, the sound options won't play it either.

I have to restart Storyline to get the audio to play.  Inconsistent - not happening all the time.  Any thoughts.

I am on a MAC using Parallels desktop and Storyline has been running fine.

Not sure what to look at next.

Thanks in advance

Hi Suzanne!

I understand your frustration! We'll do everything we can to find the fix. Let me gather a few details, and then I can point you in the right direction!

First, which program are you using? The original discussion is for Storyline 360. Are you using Storyline 360 too?

Secondly, is all of the audio not playing, or is it just the text to speech?

Lastly, I have attached a sample file that I've created on Storyline 360 using Parallels on a Mac. The file includes text to speech on the first slide. Can you open the project in Storyline 360, preview the project, and then publish the project? Is the text-to-speech playing during Preview and Publish?

I know it's frustrating to be stuck like this! I appreciate your help with providing these details.

I have a similar setup w/similar results! I'm running the latest version of Storyline 360 from the latest version of Windows on a 3-year old MacBook Pro running the latest MacOS. Sometimes I get audio, sometimes not. I was curious if you'd come across any solutions. I'll have to assume it's a Parallels issue as I haven't tried this from a PC just running Windows.

Hello Bart,

I appreciate you sharing what you are experiencing and letting us know that you are using the latest version of Storyline 360.

It sounds like this is happening while you are still creating your project, or is this happening after publishing?

If it's happening while creating your project, here are my initial thoughts on possible causes:

  • Work exclusively in the Parallels Windows environment with your software, files, and assets (such as audio)?
  • The file path for files and assets: Be sure that you are well under the 260-character limit imposed by Microsoft Windows. (The publishing process adds characters to the file path you selected. If it exceeds 260 characters, your published output will be incomplete.)

Hello,

I have the same issue. I was working on a file, trimming some audio, when suddenly the error boxes showed. I closed the window, saved the file. Then I updated Articulate, restarted my laptop and reopen the same file, but it doesn't work, timeline doesn't play. Then I opened other files and I have the same issue. Any clues?

Hi, Gustavo.

You had a similar question here, which appeared to be related to a bug in update 62 (slides that have objects animated "by paragraph" do not load).

Did updating Storyline to the latest version  (Build 3.62.27443.0) help with the audio issue you described above?

Let me know if you still need help with this!

ANCIENT Storyline 2 file; went back and when I play it, no audio.  However, if I click the refresh button on the control bar, Audio.  Then if I reload it in browser, no audio.  Any ideas?

This is only true of the intro slides; subsequent ones play.

Hi Bram,

For courses that have either video or audio in the first slide, you'll need to interact with the courses at least once first before modern browsers play the audio. This is because of a policy change implemented by Google that affects how media files are automatically played.

One workaround that you can implement is to add a start button to your course, so your browser will recognize that you are already actively viewing your course and allow the audio to play.

Hello - I am replying to this old discussion as I couldn't find anything closely related to the issue I am experiencing. I have a problem with two audio files not playing when they should be at the beginning of a slide when I publish my Storyline file as a video. They are placed at the beginning of my timeline appropriately, etc. However, it sounds like they play later in the slide/video, simultaneously with other audio files. The slide in question is slide 1.20, and out of the 22 slides, this is only happening for those two first audio files on that slide. I have attached the file. Any help troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

there was a fix in Storyline 3.80 (09/19/23) for publishing to video, playback audio and pause timeline

Fixed: Audio from the base layer wouldn't play in published video output when slide layers paused the timeline of the base layer or hide objects on the base layer.

you could first try to publish with SL 3.80 and if it doesn't help, restructure the slide 1.20
