On the second slide you can't change states by clicking on the character. You should change states when the timeline of the slide starts on the condition that the var = X.
Yes, the slide does not know what character to display without a trigger. Depending on how oyu use the character and if there are slides that are the same, you could possibly put the characters on the master slide and then only need the trigger there.
You can create multiple layouts in the master slide that have triggers. Those layouts can be applied to slides independently.
For example, assuming the character layouts were re-used and consistent, you could have layouts at the master slide with the characters. And you can have as many as you want.

Here's a tutorial with an extra tip on naming. I don't really like the way Nicole does it. https://360.articulate.com/review/content/26b6e52e-4a85-4164-8164-d730f9791ea7/review
Thank you a bunch Tom. Your text variable formula worked.
However, do I need to use the above trigger on every slide where I want character to appear?
Example - in scene 2 of attached file, do i need to copy paste this trigger in all slides where character is required?

Thanks Tom.
I get what you are suggesting but my trial at working on triggers in master slides is not working well.
In scene 3, Triggers are getting overlapped.
Also, adding triggers in master slide in one scene effects all scenes?
