Best publishing format recommendation: AICC, xAPI or cmi5?

May 31, 2023

Hello all,
Running into SCORM's limitations and researching the best replacement - AICC, xAPI or cmi5. Tried xAPI one time when I was unable to publish to SumTotal when the SCORM file was too large, so still unfamiliar. Being able to easily replace the uploaded file with a new version is very important. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance.

Disclaimer: I have a preschooler knowledge of xAPI, and none at all of cmi5 or SumTotal; so please take my comment with that in mind.

I would not advise you to use AICC unless there is no other protocol available for you to select from. While AICC has a few strengths, I do not believe that it would allow you to "easily replace the uploaded file with a new version" any more readily than SCORM 1.2 or 2004.

I would be surprised that publishing to SCORM (any version) makes a file that balloons in size any more than other standard publishing protocols; and what (very) little I know of xAPI would lead me to believe that it would be the smallest output for a given course package.

However, you indicate that you've tried it and have had little/no success, so I don't know what else to suggest except that you either try xAPI once more or use SCORM.

My opinions only, YMMV...
