Can't Add Trigger on a Layer?

Hi all,
I am still learning a lot about Storyline, so I am not sure if this is an issue that's a "user error" or if it's not a capability in Storyline.
I have a couple of layers developed off of a main slide (base layer). After the user sees the contents on the layer I would like them to be able to click the next button and be redirected to the original slide/base layer. However, when I try to add the trigger with the trigger wizard nothing happens. The trigger pane remains empty. Attached is what I am trying to do. Am I doing something wrong?

All player triggers (like the next button) are always on the base slide. If you want the next button to do different things at different times, you will need to add conditions to the triggers. Most of us use an X or button to allow users to return to the base layer.
Hi Marissa,
The trigger you're trying to add is placed on the Base Layer. If you select it on the Slide Layers panel, you'll see that it's there.
I think you're still figuring out how to go over what you want to happen. Maybe you can explain more about it or upload a sample file for us to take a look at and give suggestions for?
Oh that makes sense. I will add a button to the layer that will take the user back to the base layer.
Thank you!
You're welcome. It takes a while to learn all the ins and outs of layers and triggers.
Best of luck on your journey.
