Can't open Storyline projects

May 08, 2024

Hello,

I had been using Storyline on a previous computer that was replaced and have not been able to open the files in Storyline since being reinstalled. Says the files are corrupt or were created in an older version and some files are simply gone. Any help would be so appreciated!

Hi Brittany,

Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community!

We recommend working and saving your files on your local hard drive, typically your C: Drive. The .story project files are not part of the software installation, so you'll need to move your files to your new local machine manually.

If you have transferred your files and are having trouble opening them, you can check for a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how:

  1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
  3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
  4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

File corruption is unpredictable, and there's no straightforward way to determine what causes it. I recommend reviewing the steps described in this article to protect your project files. I hope this helps!
