Many times the step-by-step slides break into such small pieces that it really would not work to add pieces of voiceover. Is it possible to group slides and add voiceover to "sections/groups"? such as record voice to slides 3-7 and then record to slides 8-12?
Very, very new to Storyline & trying to figure some of this out before I am too far down my 1st project path & have to re-do. Thank you!

That would be another cool feature, but I'm afraid there's nothing available for that right now - kinda falls under the (lack of) playlist category.
For now, you'd have to record audio tracks for each part of a step-by-step.
Is this still true or have there been any updates that allow you to do this?

Not yet a functionality of Storyline - although we have seen some cool ways around the "background audio" set up.
