I'm currently experiencing a very peculiar issue. From the time I used Storyline 2, I've been importing SWF files using the Insert Video function because of several reasons. But now, every time I attempt to do the same thing, I get this error message:
Just for the record, my Windows Media Player and Apple QuickTime Player are both up-to-date. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance.
Where was the video created? Is this a new/recent development while working in Storyline? You'll want to ensure you're on the latest update of Storyline 2 Update 7. Also, where was the video created? When I've seen that error message before it was typically resolved by converting the video to use a different codec (using a tool such as Handbrake or Format Factory) but that wasn't for SWF files.
If it's a recent development in your files, it's also worth checking into where the .story and .swf file are located and ensure you're working on local project files, as working off a network drive could cause latency issues. If you're able to share the SWF file here with us we're also happy to take a look at inserting it and see if the issue is something we run into as well which would help narrow down where it's occurring.
Thanks for your response. I do have the latest update for Storyline 2 and
all the files involved are located in my local drive.
I also tried to verify if the swf file is the one at fault, so I did the
same process in Storyline 1. Surprisingly, I was able to import it as a
video without any problems.
Thanks Joed for that update - did you then try importing that slide from Storyline 1 into Storyline 2 to see if the video/swf file also carried over without incident?
I just tested with an SWF file I had laying around and it imported in correctly - so I'd likely need to take a look at your SWF file. I assume it does import correctly as a Flash file as well? Are you able to share it here with us? You can upload it using the "add attachment" button or if you'd prefer to share privately you can send it along here.
Yes Ashley, that's the workaround I have as of the moment. However, I still want to know the reason behind this unexpected occurrence and find out what will fix this permanently.
By the way, I'm sending the swf file privately right now. Thanks!
I took a look at the case associated with Joed's file and it wasn't produced at the recommended frame rate per the article here, and that seemed to be where the issue was and why I wasn't able to recreate with my own Flash files I imported. Have you reviewed the Flash practices to confirm that yours matches those guidelines?
I'm sorry for my confusion - how are you importing them into Storyline 2 that isn't working if the SWF does work? If you're importing as a standard video file, you won't be able to use the interactive elements per the article here.
Are you able to share one of these SWF files? As I mentioned above to Joed I haven't had any issues with the files I had access too but would gladly take a look at your files as well to see how they behave. You can post it here or you're welcome to send along to me privately here.
When I went to first use the "insert video" function using the SWF file I received an error message about not having the correct video players or codecs - so I took a look and Storyline 2 wasn't setting the file type correctly to the SWF. When I changed that, and still used the "insert as video" option it came in as expected and you'll see that I was able to enable the seekbar within the player. Slide 1 includes it as a Flash object and Slide 2 as a video - and the latter is the only one that will have the play/pause functionality for the video. You can check out the example I attached here and preview it. You'll notice on the timeline it still shows both as SWF files, but that is to be expected and the same behavior occurred in SL1.
Let me know if you have any questions after checking into my example attached.
Yup - that's where I changed it. What happens when you try to make that adjustment? I also see you're using the French interface, I'm curious if you have tried it in the English UI?
When I go to insert a video, it pops up like the normal Windows insert, but has a Storyline icon in the top left of the box - so I just want to confirm that yours is operating the same way - here is what it looks like on my end. Also what Windows version are you using? I used Windows 8.1:
Perhaps it's an issue with the English version of Storyline within a French Windows UI? I don't have a French language set up, but can check with some colleagues who may.
Thanks Pierre - so you're going to try importing the SL1 file into SL2 to see if it'll bring the SWF file in the way you'd want? Good next steps - if you're still having difficulty I think I'd want to get you into a support case (I know you're favorite place!) so that our Support engineers could take a better look at the set up.
Est-ce qu'un utilisateur de Storyline avec Windows en Français peut essayer d'importer mon fichier storylineMovie.swf (pièce jointe plus haut) en tant que Vidéo ?
The SWF files won't be synced with the slide timeline and seekbar based on the set up that an SWF file is designed for interaction. If you need it synced with the slide timeline you'd want to insert it as a video file as I mentioned earlier in this post. You'll see this noted in the top of this tutorial on inserting videos and/or flash files.

Thanks Joed - I'll take a look and respond to you as a part of your case so that any information on the SWF file is kept private.
Hello
Same problem here, same message. SWF is around 27Mo.
Imports and plays just fine in SL1!
Importing the slide from SL1 into SL2 works but i'd rather get this fixed...
Hi Pierre,

Hi Ashley,
I checked everything (frame rate, player version (10.3)...).
As my animations were done in Animate CC, I reimported them in Flash CS6 but they still don't load in SL2.
But :
- I can import all of them in SL1
- I can import them as SWF in SL2
Hi Pierre,

Hi Ashley,
I want to import the SWFs as videos because of the synchronisation with the seekbar.
But I can only import them as SWF in SL2.
They import OK as videos in SL1.

Hi Ashley,
I made a quick test and it looks like SL2 doesn't like Flash movies with sound and scenes.
This file will import OK as a movie in SL1.
Made with Animate CC, published for Flash Player 10.3.
Thanks Pierre for sharing - I'm downloading now to take a look.

Hi Ashley,
Do you mean you force file filter to SWF? That doesn't work for me...
Hi Pierre,
Yup - that's where I changed it. What happens when you try to make that adjustment? I also see you're using the French interface, I'm curious if you have tried it in the English UI?
Same error message!
I use English version of Storyline, that's French Windows UI buttons you see!

Same kind of window and icon here as well (windows 7 x64).
I checked and SL1 also shows Storyline icon but let me import!
Thanks Pierre - so you're going to try importing the SL1 file into SL2 to see if it'll bring the SWF file in the way you'd want? Merci !
I forgot about it but same problem with SL2 V8. Can't import my update SWF...
Hi Pierre
not sure if this helps but could you not use the insert > flash option instead of insert > video
Hi Wendy,
It works as SWF but I don't get synchronisation with seekbar (it justs replays from start) which I need as it's a quite a long Flash animation.
Hi Pierre,
The SWF files won't be synced with the slide timeline and seekbar based on the set up that an SWF file is designed for interaction. If you need it synced with the slide timeline you'd want to insert it as a video file as I mentioned earlier in this post.
