cannot open existing project after software reinstall

Yesterday, I got a new PC. I downloaded SL this morning, activated with my SN, registered. Now trying to open an existing *.story and I get msg: "This project cannot be opened. It may have been created in a newer version of SL". I checked and it said there were no updates (from the link on the menu bar)
what do I need to do??    thanks
