Cannot preview or publish Storyline course with graphics or video

Jun 16, 2014

I've got a course that was originally done by an outside vendor about a year ago.  The course now needs a couple of edits, which is no problem . . I made the edits and saved the course.  However, when I preview the course or publish it in any format, none of the graphics appear and none of the videos play.  The really weird thing is that when the course is viewed in Story View, the graphics all look like they are there.  In addition, when the slides are viewed in normal view, the slides in the left pane all include the graphics.  After checking the timeline, all of the 'eyes' are turned on.

I figured this may have been some sort of glitch on my computer, which was recently 'upgraded' to MS 2013, so I tested one of MY Storyline courses.  All of the graphics appeared and there was no problem with the video.  It played, previewed and published just fine.

Last thing:  This vendor course played, previewed and publshed just fine BEFORE the MS 2013 upgrade.

Any advice/info is much appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Sharon and welcome to Heroes!

The course play on your computer prior to the upgrade or it played for your vendor?  You may want to try importing the .story file into a new project to see if it resolves the issue with the images. You'll also want to confirm that you're working with all your .story files on your local drive as described here.

Thanks for the welcome and prompt reply, Ashley.  To respond to your question, the course played on MY computer prior to the upgrade.  Once the course source files were turned over to the company, the vendor was out of the picture.

I always work from my local drive with both SL and Studio and did so with this situation as well.  I tried importing the course into a new project and it made things worse . . now NONE of the graphics or videos show up in normal view.  Out of curiousity, I imported a course where the graphics and videos showed up in normal view.  Everything looked fine.  Then I imported some of the vendor slides into the course that worked.  Some of the pictures showed up, none of the shapes or videos did.  I believe I've narrowed it down to the vendor's course; there's something going on with it.

Hi Sharon,

It seems to be something with that particular file then, and unfortunately issues with corruption are not easily diagnosed nor do they always appear right away. If doing the import worked for some slides, it may be worth doing a few slides as a time to see what you can pull over and then what you need to replace. I'd do a save prior to each import in case there is something specific within the original file that is causing this issue.
