Change State of Text Box on Button Click not working.

Dec 08, 2014

Hello, I will do my best to explain the situation and will attach the project.

Currently I have two text boxes named "Correct APA format" and "Incorrect APA format" on which I am wanting to change the state from "hidden" to "normal" on click of  the "Submit" button based on whether or not another text-entry box has this specific value:

"Jennifer M. Sacheck, Julia F. Kuder, Christina D. Economos. (2010). Physical Fitness, Adiposity, and Metabolic Risk Factors in Young College Students. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 42, 1039-1044. 10.1249/MSS.0b013e3181c9216b"

"Correct APA format" shows if the entry is equal to the above value, and "Incorrect APA format" shows if the entry is not equal to the above value.

Currently, I have two separate trigger instances set to the "Submit" button for the two different text boxes listed above. "Correct APA format" actually reveals on click, but when I have "Incorrect APA format" set to the same parameters with the only difference being "not equal to" the above stated value, it continually shows before I hit the submit button.

If more explanation or clarity is need please let me know. Thank you.

Hello Andrew, and welcome to heroes!

I looked at the file, but I did not see the Incorrect text box. I added one in, and set the triggers to change the state of X text box to normal on condition that text entry is equal to "Jennifer M. Sacheck" and one to trigger the other text box if text entry is not equal to "Jennifer M. Sacheck"

It is working as expected now. You can see the attached file. Hope this helps!

Hello Emily, thank you for the reply. I opened my project file and compared any changes you made to what I had. The only change was "text box 4" or "Incorrect APA format" was below "text box 3" or "correct APA format" on the timeline. When I moved text box 4 above text box 3 then it worked. Why would that make a difference though?

Andrew:

Your example of:

Jennifer M. Sacheck, Julia F. Kuder, Christina D. Economos. (2010). Physical Fitness, Adiposity, and Metabolic Risk Factors in Young College Students. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 42, 1039-1044. 10.1249/MSS.0b013e3181c9216

Should actually be:

Sacheck, J. M., Kuder, J. F., & Economos, C. D. (2010). Physical fitness, adiposity, and metabolic risk factors in young college students. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 42(6), 1039-1044. Doi: 10.1249/MSS.0b013e3181c9216b

and with a hanging indent (of course).

Hey Jack, I appreciate the corrections. This is currently a place holder and not the final version. But you may be able to help me with this question. I noticed in the preview mode when I was testing out the triggers that I was not able to format the text in the text entry box , such as adding italicized letters. Do you know how to do this?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Andrew,

A text entry box can have a different font applied to it, but I see that I wasn't able to change it to italics, although I could apply bold formatting.  The variable reference later though, can be italicized.  I see the same behavior in Storyline 1 Update 7  as I do testing this in Storyline 2 Update 2, so I'll be sharing this with our QA team.
