I want to modify the colour of the background template of the interactions. I have used several of them in the course. However, although I can change all the elements in the master I can't change the background colour, well I can, howver the coloyr doesn't filter through to the slide its self and retains the blue background. it seems I have to do this per interaction slide.
What type of interaction? Are these interactions from Storyline, itself, or are you importing from Engage '09?
If they're Storyline interactions, you'll want to select the slide that contains your interaction, then open the "Design" tab. Any layout that's being used in your project should be listed here. Generally, your custom layouts from your Master slides will show on the left-hand side of this list.
If your design is available here, right-click on the design and it should give you the option to "Apply to Selected Slides":
