Choose a character not working

I've started to create my course where the participant chooses a character at the beginning of the course. I have used my triggers and it seems to be working fine in scene 1, but when I get to scene 2 my chosen character is defaulting to Gail (the normal state). In addition, some of the characters are popping up distorted. I've been having lots of issues with storyline recently - files freezing/shutting down, quiz slides showing old answer choices on hover, slides not performing triggers.

I've been assuming the slide gets corrupted somehow and I usually just delete it and re-create it. However with this particular scene, I've spent hours creating the content and triggers.

1. Is there anything I can do to avoid some of the above issues in the future?

2. Do you notice anything in my story that I missed when setting up variables/triggers that would cause it not to work? It was working the first 3 times I reviewed (I'm viewing the entire project).

Thank you!

  • It looks to be working.

    1. I think when you preview and go back the slide isn't accepting the changed variable; if you redo the preview it does; for testing you could create a button that manually resets the variable so you know it's being reset
    2. when you copied and pasted the characters you also copied and pasted the triggers into the states; I'd redo the characters so you don't have hidden triggers in the states which could potentially create issues
    3. generally there are a lot of redundant issues that could make your file a bit lighter

Here's a recording that shows a few ideas.

Thank you so much Tom. I didn't know that when preview, it doesn't accept the changed variable. And thanks for the recording. I've only been doing instructional design for about 10 months, so I'm always looking for ways to make my work more efficient.
