Click Outside and Scrolling Panels

Feb 12, 2015

I've been using Storyline for a few years now and I've run into a major problem when upgrading my courses from 1 to 2.  In virtually all courses, I have a click outside trigger that triggers a try again layer that gives the user additional guidance which is often needed.  What I have found is that WHEN my trigger involves clicking outside anything that is inside the scrolling panel the trigger doesn't function.

Has anyone else encountered this issue or know of a work around?  On a hunch, I tried completely recreating in 2 and the issue still exists and there is no "..." indicating that the trigger is incomplete.

I just wanted to share a workaround for this if anyone should have similar problems before a fix is implemented.  All I did was trigger the picture that is in my scrolling panel to show the try again layer when clicked...this way the layer isn't triggered when using the scrolling panel AND since the hotspots are on top of the picture, when the user clicks them, the layer won't be triggered.

I could further solve the problem outside of the scrolling panel by placing a hotspot to trigger the layer there, but I didn't feel it was needed in my example.

Hi everyone!  I wanted to provide an update here, as Storyline 2 Update 8 was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here.

The item you all may be particularly interested in is how it fixes an issue where a trigger wouldn't work if it was set to execute when the learner clicked outside a hotspot that was inside a scrolling panel.  To note, this fix is for Flash output; HTML5 doesn't support the Click outside trigger.

You can download the latest update here, and after downloading and installing the latest update you’ll want to republish any existing content to ensure that the updates and fixes are applied.
