Completion Marking with Tin Can

Jul 07, 2015

I am using the Litmos LMS for a course with many Storyline course modules and video modules. We are publishing for Tin Can, nixing the Articulate Player option for mobile, and using HTML5 output for iPad instead.

The Storyline modules do not mark as complete on Litmos when run from a PC; but they mark as complete just fine when those same modules are run from the iPad.

There is no issue with the video-only modules (MP4 videos) running on Litmos. They mark as complete just fine, so it appears to be something to do with the Tin Can settings for the Storyline modules.

In all cases, the "Track using number of slides viewed" number is one slide less than the actual number of slides in the course.

I've published many Storyline courses for Litmos in the past and have not had this issue. I've had another Tin Can-related issue recently, and wonder what changes may have been made to the Tin Can output with the latest releases of Storyline 2. I am currently using the very latest release -- 5: 1505.515.

Any help is much appreciated, as this course is piloting very soon.

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for reaching out here and sharing this odd behavior. The changes to Tin Can in Update 5 of Storyline 2 are documented here in the release notes, but I haven't heard of it not working on the PC but on the iPad (often I feel we hear the reverse?). Have you also tested it at SCORM Cloud to rule out any issues with Litmos?

I agree with you that usually the iPad is the "problem child" when it comes to issues like this.

We have tested several of the same modules on SCORMCloud and they show proper completion status there.

Litmos support indicates they have not changed their SCORM or Tin Can engine recently.

I am not sure what to explore next to try to resolve this issue. My understanding is that we need to use Tin Can in order to get completion data from the iPad. I believe that won't work if we publish for an earlier version of SCORM.

Hi Rebecca,

You only need to publish with Tin Can if you'll be using the mobile player and your LMS needs log in credentials as described here. If you're only using the HTML5 output, I'd look at using the SCORM output - but you may want to check with Litmos on that too.  I'd also suggest sharing the SCORM Cloud example with your Litmos team and see if they're able to share any insights based on that.
