Copying the content of a layer to the hover state of a button

Oct 16, 2016

Hello,

Let me preface this by saying that I am very new to Storyline.

I have a rollover text box that displays when the user hovers over a button.  I have placed this textbox on its own layer, rather than on the 'hover' state of the button.

Someone showed me in person that it's really a better practice to place the textbox on the 'hover' state, so they copied the textbox from the layer, and pasted it into the 'hover' state on the base layer, then deleted the layer that the textbox was originally on.

As I watched, I didn't bother to ask how they were doing this, because it seemed pretty self-explanatory:

1. Go to the textbox layer

2. Copy

3. Go to base layer

4. Edit states on the button

5. Right-click on the hover state of the button and paste (or alternatively, control + v)

Step 5 is where I run into a problem, because apparently you can't right-click or control + v on a state, so I have no idea how she pasted this content from a layer to a state.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

I suspect your problem is step 2. Be sure you are copying the box, not just the text. Click the outline of the textbox until it is solid. See the attached video. Pasting to a state works just like you think it should, if there is something to paste.

As an alternative, you can select the text and copy, edit states, make a new textbox and paste.

FYI: I have gotten away from using buttons, they come with a lot of unwanted items and actions that I seldom want. I create an object (frequently a textbox) and add triggers and states to it only as I want.  All the built-in states can be attached to an object.
