Cover Photo Arrow Not Displaying / Must click 2 times to start

Nov 30, 2022

Hope you can help with this! I've uploaded a picture as the cover photo. My menu controls are turned off, and I can see the big arrow within Storyline.

However, when I upload to Review 360, there is no arrow displayed in the center of the screen to prompt the user to click. The same thing happens when I publish to the web. (A few weeks ago, the arrow did show up so I'm wondering if this is a glitch in the recent Storyline updates).

In Chrome and Safari, I need to click two times (instead of once) to get the story to play. In Firefox, the story begins to play automatically.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this error?

Hi Kimberly,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue!

I created a test file and published to Review 360. In Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, the play button prompts me to start the course. Have you tried pasting the Review link in an incognito window? I found that if play the course in a window where I'm already logged into my Articulate account, the video will play automatically. Please let me know if this helps!

If you're able to share your file with us, I'd be happy to investigate this further. You can upload it here or privately in a support case. We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.

Hi Kelly,

In Review 360, the problem seems to occur when there is no audio on the first slide, and the second slide contains a video. In the attached sample story file, you'll see I've hidden the audio track on the first slide, so you can try to duplicate the problem.

I found that when I made the audio track visible, the file worked as expected in Review 360.

However, when I actually published the file to the Web and viewed it in an incognito window, the results varied based on the browser I used. In Safari, the cover photo shows up and it works as expected. In Chrome and Firefox, the cover photo with the arrow never appears.

The problem seems to occur regardless of if player controls are on or off. It would be great if you could fix this glitch, because there are times when I don't have audio on the first slide. Thanks!

Hi Kimberly,

Thanks for reaching out!

You'll only consistently see your cover photo after loading your course if you place a media file on the very first slide of your project. Here's an edited published version of your course with an audio file placed on the slide which constantly displays your cover photo when loaded. I've also attached a sample project file so you can publish the course to your own Review 360 account to confirm the behavior.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Jennifer,

Previously, learners only saw a gray button when a course with media in the first slide is launched on a browser that prevents media files from automatically playing. The Course Cover Photo enhancement was introduced as a way to give learners more control of the appearance of this screen.

If you'd like to change the behavior of cover photos in Storyline 360, you can do so through a feature request!
