Creating a menu

I am very new to Storyline 3 and have created my first story. I have a menu slide with buttons and have these set up so they navigate to the different scenes. What I would like to do now is have the buttons on the menu page change color once a scene has been completed and the student clicks 'main menu' but I cannot figure out how to do it. I have tried altering the states but with my extremely limited experince I can't get it to work the way I would like.
Is there a step by step 9idiots) guide which I can get hold of?
Thank you

Hi, Simon,
This post explains how to create a custom menu slide.

The main goal of those instructions is to control navigation. However, the same basic concept (using variables to track what's happening and conditions to control exactly when a trigger executes) would work for controlling the state of your buttons.
