creating interactive scenario tutorial

I am new to Storyline and struggling with basics even though I've watched many tutorials.
In this one, I downloaded the file and followed along. I added the new layer with the new text. When it says select choice 1, what does that mean? Where do you select it? The baseline objects are dimmed and if I 'undim' them I can't select on the slide. So while I added this new layer, it doesn't show up when I preview.
HELP. This is the kind of thing making me crazy. I do what it says and it doesn't work and I can't find out why.

Ok Sue, I'm not sure what tutorial you are referring to but if you describe what you are trying to do (and maybe attach your story file to this post) then I can try to help you out.
It's the interactive scenario tutorial with the practice folder (2).
THanks for any help. I've attached the file
Hi Sue, I see what you are trying to do. Looks like you just completed the step in which you have added some text to the layer called "choice 1"
So now you want to go back to the base layer and add a trigger to the button called "Choice 1" The reason you are having trouble is because you are trying to select the items on the base layer while still on the "choice 1" layer.
If you take a look at the bottom right panel on the screen cap below, you will see that "choice 1" shows as yellow. Before you can add the trigger to the button, you need to select the "Untitled Slide" layer. You select it by clicking on it (I have marked where you need to click with a red arrow).
Once you have done this the "Untitled Slide" layer should be yellow. This means you are not working on the base layer.
Now you can click on the blue button " Choice 1" to select it. With the button selected, you can add the trigger that tells Storyline to show layer "choice 1" when the button is clicked.
Hopefully this helps you out and please let me know if you need any additional help.
