Custom failure layer shows in preview, but not when published

Oct 10, 2023

Hello,

In Storyline 360, I created a custom "failure" layer for my quiz results slide which works in the preview but reverts to a built in layer when I publish in review 360. Any suggestions for how to fix this? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Karin, and welcome to the E-Learning Heroes Community! Glad you're here!

Thanks so much for reaching out! I'm happy to help! 🎉

Could you please share what layer/slide number it reverts to when you attempt this on your end? I'm not able to replicate this behavior on my end, and I want to ensure I have a better understanding of what you are seeing! If possible, a screenshot would be helpful!

Have you tried testing your published output in an LMS to see if you get the same behavior?

I'd recommend seeing if you see this behavior in SCORM Cloud, which is an LMS that we use for testing as well. Here's how:

Looking forward to hearing from you!

When I publish your project to Review 360 a custom "failure" layer will never show because you have unlimited number of attempts to take the quiz. The Try again layer would keep looping until the correct answer is provided which in turn leads straight to the Success layer on the Result slide. When I limit the number of attempts to 1 or more, a custom "failure" layer will eventually show as it appears on the Result slide in your project (attached photo).

Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing. I should be seeing the Failure layer on slide 3.2.  Also, this  worked as intended in Review 360 for many tests. The first time this happened was during a job interview!

Looking at Phil's comment I went back and realized that suddenly the failure layer on the question slide was showing instead of the failure layer on the results slide. So, I deleted those layers on the question slide and added a trigger to move the learner to the results slide when the submit button was clicked. This resolved the initial problem. Now when the user returns to the quiz to try again, none of the choices are clickable. I tried navigating away from the slide using the home button and then entering the quiz again, but it didn't make a difference. I checked and there are unlimited attempts allowed.

Hi Karin,

I'm happy to chime in! When the trigger to Jump to Result slide is present after clicking Submit, the question is considered submitted already after the jump. When Storyline returns to the question slide, the user can no longer enter another answer.

I recommend defining the number of attempts instead of Unlimited to show the custom Failure layer after reaching the maximum attempts.

If you want us to look at your current setup, you can share the modified Storyline file here. You may also share it privately by sending it along in a support case. We'll delete it when we're done!
