Custom Photographic Characters

May 24, 2015

I would like to create some firefighter photographic characters.   Is it possible to import them like a character pack or do I need to insert the picture and change the states?  Has anyone tried this and how did you do it?  I'm assuming I would need a green screen to edit the background.

Hi Alan,

As a graphic designer I do this all the time in SL courses. You cannot add packs of characters as far as I am aware. If you want them to move/change position on slide then yes states are probably the best way as you can switch the state using triggers for multiple different interactions. If you simply want to display them in turn with content,  layers can also be used.

A few things to note...

You are best photographing against white for the most part unless the character is wearing white in which case choose a colour that gives enough contrast without tinting the clothing of the person. Lighting is key as you dont want big shadows and you want your colour balance to be normal, look at how photo-shoots are set up.

When editing remove the backdrop in Photoshop or an equivalent, making sure you dont have a thin white [coloured] halo around the edge of your character. When saving your images with a transparent background use a  format with an alpha channel such as PNGs.

Finally when importing into states in storyline use the change picture function on the right click but be aware that if your new character is wider or taller [due to arms out or whatever] then storyline may scale your image in an odd way. To fix this right click and select 'size and position' and change the values to 100% for width and height.
