Dead Hot Spots!

Jul 15, 2014

Hi All,

I've published my first piece of eLearning and I've encountered a strange problem. During the Try Mode, clicking on the correct item does absolutley nothing on some computers, but works completely fine on others. Is this something that other people have encountered?

Any advice very much appreciated!

Hi Mark,

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Can you tell us a little more about your project, please? Are your learners viewing the course through a web server, LMS, etc.?

Also, what type of published content are they viewing - HTML5 or Flash?

Do you know if the issues come up with specific web browsers, or if this happens with different versions and types of browsers?

If you'd like, you're welcome to share a URL for the course or the .story file. Please just keep in mind that if the project is over 20 MB, we may need to discuss other options for sharing the file as the site will only allow up to this size at this time.

Best,

Christine

Hi Christine,

Thanks very much for the reply!

So far, the course is only being viewed as stand-alone. I didn't want to upload to our LMS until I had it working perfectly.

The file is being run through Flash Player. I have version 11,8,800,168 installed on my own PC and it works perfectly. I have Windows 7 (SP1). IE v8.

I've checked on one of the computers that isn't working and Flash Player is the same version as above. Windows XP (SP3), IE v7.

The published Flash file is around 1.5 MB (but the original Articulate Story file is 93MB!!)

Hope this info is helpful!

Thanks again for the response.

Hi Mark,

By "stand-alone" do you mean locally? If so, are you publishing for CD? If not - that may be part of the problem.

If you view a published Storyline presentation on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.

To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review the article below for more information:

Publishing and Sharing Articulate Storyline Content

  • I suggest using SCORM Cloud for your course - it's a great place to test SCORM content.
  • Another option would be to use our Tempshare server. Just keep in mind that this server is only available for testing content - it is not officially supported by Articulate and all content will be removed automatically after 10 days.
  • You're always welcome to try out Articulate Online, as well - it's available for a free 30 day trial.

If you're publishing for CD, to run the course locally, make sure that the users are running the .EXE file and not the HTML file.

Let me know if you see any improvement!

Best,

Christine

Hi Chrstine,

Many thanks indeed for the very thorough response!

Yes, that's correct. I published to CD and storred in a folder on the network here at work that can be accessed by any pc at any time. I can confirm that we are running the .exe rather than the HTML file.

Is it worth me uploading to the Tempshare server?

The only thing that jumps out at me as being different so far is the Win7 Vs Win XP.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

It may be that you're hosting this on a network server. I think it's worth it to test the .exe on your local hard drive, or test on the Tempshare server.

If you want users to be able to run it locally, they'll want to move the CD files to their hard drive before launching it. Network drives can cause some issues with content and that might be contributing to the issues.

If you try that, however, and still see issues, please consider sharing your .story file here. I'd be happy to take a look. Just keep in mind that the file needs to be 20 MB or smaller to upload to the forums.

Thanks!

Christine

Hi Christine,

I finally got round to testing this and I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that there are sometimes problems running these files over network drives. Copying to the C Drive or an external memory stick and running from there seemed to work perfectly.

Are there any suggestions for fixing this problem?

I've asked our LMS Administrator to upload to our Beta testting site so we'll see how it works on there!

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mark!

Unfortunately, files aren't supported on network drives, so I'm afraid I can't really give any tips on that.

If you do have a web server, even if it's internal, that would be your best bet. It sounds like this is what you're wanting to test with your LMS Admin - if so, I'd certainly like to hear how that goes.

If that doesn't work, you'll want to distribute the content for downloading and then have the learners extract that content on their hard drive before launching it. It's a little tedious, I know, but it may give the best results.

Please let me know how it goes!

Christine
