Default button
Jul 01, 2015
Hello
I'm struggling with setting a button as default. I don't know if I did anything wrong or that it's just not possible. I'm just starting with Storyline.
Here are the steps I took:
- Insert a button from Insert > Controls;
- Select button > Edit States;
- Changed the colors of the states;
- Done Editing States;
- Right Click button > Set as Default Button;
Then I inserted a new button (again from Insert > Controls). The Normal State is the right color, but the other states aren't. Did I do something wrong?

Hi David,
I don't think you did anything wrong. Looks like this is something with SL, where you can only change the color globally to one color. If you want custom color states then you have to use the preset themes. Otherwise just copy the one you made. I could be wrong, hopefully a STAFF member pops in and has something for you.
Hi David,
Without seeing the button and states you set up, I'm guessing the new buttons you add have colors that match your theme colors?
Thanks for the replies. I read the article about theme colors, but changing these colors, didn't affect my button.
I made some screenshots to clarify. My Button is the button I want to use through my scene. I set this as a default button. The Default Button is the button I get when I insert a button. As you can see, the states don't match. Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance
Thanks David for those screenshots - could you share a copy of the .story file here with us so that I could take a look at how you've set up the states and the behavior when I copy, duplicate or insert a new button?
No problem, at the moment there isn't any content.
Hi David,
Thanks for sharing the .story file here - and sorry for the delay. Holiday weekend here in the US. :-)
I took a look and I see that adding in a new button doesn't keep the same states - but if you copy or duplicate the button that works as expected and keeps all your custom states. I'll share this with our QA team,but in the meantime you'll want to use copy or paste as a workaround.
Indeed, I also noticed that copying a button keeps its states. This is a good, temporary workaround. But the story is meant to become a template, so I want to make it as easy as possible for the end-user. Hopefully the QA team has a solution.
Thanks for looking at it!
No problem David and I'm glad the copying will work in the meantime.
Ashley
Did anyone of the QA team already had some time to look at this issue?
Kind regards, David.
Hi David,
I've reported it to the team, but I don't have any updates in regards to a timeframe for when I'll hear back regarding a fix - so I'd continue to use the workaround. Once I have an update I'll post here in the thread so that you'll receive an update via an email notification.
Hi! Any news related to this? I'm struggling with the same problem. Me and my team do use a lot of buttons in our courses and I think it's a waste of time to set the states again when building a course. It would be super to be able to define the states of the default button 😊
Hello Rita!
We don't have this feature in Storyline 360, but I can see how it would be a beneficial add! We track these suggestions using this contact form.
Would you mind sharing why customizing a default button would be beneficial to your course? Our product team will take a look and determine next steps.
We'll keep you updated in this discussion!
