Developing offline content for iPad - options?

Oct 14, 2015

Hi folks,

To run a Storyline 2 story on iPads offline, is the Articulate Storyline app my only option or is there another way to load the folder and run the story?

Context: Our client would like us to create a training module (using Storyline 2) that we will distribute to their trainers. The story module would be loaded onto each trainer's iPad, and ideally launch via an icon on the home screen. The trainers would connect their iPads to large screens for group viewing while they discuss choices and move through the training.

I've downloaded the Storyline app, but my concerns are:

a) The reviews say the app does not work with the latest iOS update (version 9.x)

b) Even if that gets resolved, it may happen again with the next iOS release

c) We'd prefer to be able to just distribute a file or download link, and not force the trainers to also download a separate app. We need to keep this as simple as possible.

I need to confirm to our client ASAP whether this is doable, and also need to test and confirm for our own team. What do you suggest?

Hi Heather!

We added support for iOS 9 in Update 7 for Storyline 2. See this article for details on how to update your Storyline software and your published courses.

See here for info on how to initially launch and download published content for later offline use.

A Wi-Fi connection is required to initially download content for offline viewing in the Articulate Mobile Player. See this article for more information.

Thanks Leslie. Is it possible to view the content offline on an iPad without using the mobile app -- would it just open in Safari if you don't have the app loaded?

How does the content open on a PC when it is offline -- does it still use a web browser?

I don't have a way to publish the content online right now in order to download a copy for testing, so I can't see how it would work! All the active content I have online was set to not allow user downloading.

My concern with the iPad was with the Articulate Mobile Player itself -- it had reviews saying it didn't work in iOS 9. Maybe it was actually the content itself that wasn't working in iOS 9, and that was resolved with the latest updates?

I don't have any answers for your questions, but if you want to test your content there is a free service that allows you to publish your content online for testing purposes (specifically designed for iPads). The link below will take you to that website, all you have to do is publish your content as a zip file and upload it to the website. I've used it before and it works great.
