Drag and Drop Motion Path Images Disappear on Click

Dec 10, 2023

Hi there!

I'm creating a mock-up of a drag-and-drop question where issues (in the shape of boulders) fall from the sky and the learner must drag the boulder to the correct bin. (Screenshots below.)

  • The boulders fall from the sky via a downward motion path at staggered intervals.
  •  When the learner hovers over a falling boulder, the timeline pauses so the learner has time to "grab" the boulder and move it to the correct bin. The timeline resumes when the boulder loses focus.
  • Here's where the trouble comes in:
    • When I click the boulder to drag it to a bin, it disappears altogether.
    • I am unable to drag the now ghost boulder to the correct bin because there is nothing to drag. :)
    • All boulder animations stop and cease falling from the sky after the first boulder is clicked and disappears.
  • (If it's of consequence, the background image is an animated gif.)

I've searched high and low and have not yet run across what I am doing incorrectly.

I'd very much appreciate your advice.

Thank you for your time.

Update: I did find a discussion on a similar issue with motion paths but it wasn't the exact issue I'm having--the mysterious disappearing boulders. https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/problem-wih-drag-ang-drop-activity-and-motion-paths

Update 2: Another similar issue that seems to indicate that maybe motion paths and drag and drop don't play well together: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/stopping-motion-path-animation-with-click-drag

Watch out for falling boulders

Hi Gigi,

Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community!✨

Are you willing to share your project file with us so we can take a closer look at what's going on? You can upload it here or share it privately in a support case for our talented Support Engineers. Anything shared within a case will be deleted from our systems once troubleshooting is complete!

Hello Gigi,

Thanks for sharing a copy of your project file. After testing it, I can confirm that there isn't a way to "catch" an object while it is still completing its motion path to perform a drag-and-drop interaction. You'll either need to wait for the object to complete its animation path, or remove the animation entirely for the interaction to work properly.

A fixed position needs to be established for an object in order for the click-and-drag interaction to display correctly. The images in your slide were disappearing because the objects were defaulting to their original starting positions, which were outside the slide area when the learners clicked on them before the animations were completed.

Let me know if you have any questions or clarifications!
