embedded YouTube videos are not showing up after being published

Nov 21, 2013

I created a slide show in Storyline with several embedded videos from YouTube.  I included the videos using both methods in Storyline - Insert Video from Website and Insert Web Object.  The Insert Video from Website previews fine (Web Object cannot be previewed) but neither of them show up after the slides have been published.  I have the latest Flash player installed and I am viewing the published slides using Chrome.

Very frustrating - I have looked through all of the features and have tried publishing to Web, LMS and CD and I am getting the same result when the video slide comes up - just a blank screen.  The seeker bar I have turned on at the bottom of the player is running but there is not video at all.

Please help!

Hi Trace and welcome to Heroes!

You mention publishing in a few different ways, but are you testing the published output within the intended environment instead of testing locally?  If you view published Storyline content on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.

Ashley,

Ok thank you.  I published to LMS and sent to my client.  They were able to load the video to there LMS and view the videos.

Is there another option if the client is not able to load to their LMS.  How would the client view the videos if I published to CD and wanted them to proof that way?

Thank you.

Hi Trace,

I personally like to use either SCORM Cloud or Tempshare for testing purposes. SCORM Cloud will also help you in terms of figuring out what should work in the LMS as it's an industry standard testing method. What I like about Tempshare, is that the testing link is inactive after 10 days - so it makes it easy to throw something up there to test and know that it'll be removed after 10 days.

I have videos from Vimeo embedded in my course via web objects. When accessed through the LMS, some of the users see the videos and others see a blank screen, and others see an error message telling them to check their internet connection. These users are all on the same network and with similar hardware, but dispersed across the country. Any ideas as to the reason for inconsistencies?

Hi Jason and welcome to Heroes!

I'd suggest that they check the system requirements for viewing outlined here, and ensure that the similar hardware all matches up to what is required. Since some of the users are getting a message about checking their internet connection, it sounds like the connection may have timed out. Are you able to find out from any of the users who were experiencing difficulty if it happened on a particular video, using a certain browser, etc.? The inconsistencies would lead me to believe it's a computer specific issue, especially their internet connection.
