Error Launching Storyline ZIP to Canvas

Aug 23, 2016

Hi everyone. I'm encountering an error when I try to launch a Storyline file in Canvas. UPDATE: I tried to launch the file locally, too, and I still get this error.

I followed these awesome instructions, which guided me through creating the zip file with the right launch player settings:

https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/publishing-storyline-content-in-canvas-lms

When I tried to launch the file I received this error (see screenshot): https://gyazo.com/781991ee5c4fb06dbaa45bb59ea2c853  UNABLE TO ACQUIRE LMS API.  Then I received a ton of debugging code.

I tried several different ZIP files, including files not created by me, but created by someone who taught a Lynda.com course I completed.

Any help is appreciated. I'm just doing the proof of concept; once I can prove it works, I can hire a "Hero" to build the instructional content for us!

Thanks in advance for your assistance! Kristen

Thank you! I am so touched that you took the time to load that into SCORM for me, a complete stranger. :) I also can't run the file locally, when i open it I get the same error.

I also use SCORM CLOUD, but, we were looking for a new elearning tool so that we could stop paying SCORM CLOUD and Canvas. We are essentially paying for 2 LMS's.

But I will open a ticket with Canvas to ask why they think it might happening.

Hi thanks everyone. Since it works in SCORM cloud for you, I decided to launch it in my very own instance of SCORM cloud. It works, but it creates 3 pop up windows before showing the course.  Do you know how I can turn that off? I looked at the Publisher settings and player settings, and didn't see why it would do that.

Hi Kristen,

I am having the exact same issues with importing my Storyline 2 courses into Canvas. I also tested in SCORM Cloud (it worked there) and sent in a ticket to Canvas (waiting for response). In the meantime, were you ever successful with your import or did you get a response from Canvas that allowed you to get the Storyline files working?

Thanks!

Hey Sage and welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Sorry to hear that you experienced a similar issue, but sounds like you are on the right path to resolution.

I do not have an update to share here, of course, but hopefully Kristen is still subscribed. If you do not hear back soon, you are welcome to contact her directly via the 'Contact Me' option on her user profile here.

Hi. Unfortunately, I was not able to get any of the modules I built in Storyline to work in Canvas by myself. Both vendors tried to support me, but they referred me back to each other (the other vendor) so often that after a few weeks I stopped trying to do it on my own.

My course does use Storyline, but the modules were developed by a software company (Reflection Software in Aurora, Illinois). As part of the agreement with the software developer, we required that the modules (as SCORM objects) worked in Canvas, which they did.

Here are the steps I took when uploading the final SCORM objects from the vendor (into Canvas), see below.

I love the course and how it looks; I just didn't have the technical knowledge to build the Storyline modules myself. Let me know if you have any questions for me.

Thanks! Kristen

1. Locate your Course.

2. Under the "SCORM" section, click the Upload button.

3. Select your SCORM package (.zip) from the window.

4. Once the SCORM package is finished uploading, choose "Import as a Graded Assignment" from the Choose Import Type dropdown.

5. Click "Go".

6. To test the module:

a. Click the Preview button (the eye icon).

7. There are two ways to launch the module. Either directly in the Instructure window (default), or in a separate tab (preferred). To change this setting:

a. Click the "Assignments" section header.

b. Click the Gear icon next the module you want to change, and select "Edit".

c. Click "More Options".

d. Scroll down to the "Submission Type" section, and check/uncheck the "Load This Tool In A New Tab" checkbox.

e. Click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

8. To Publish the module:

a. Click the "Assignments" section header.

b. Click the Publish button (the cloud icon). It will turn green to indicate the assignment is published.

I'm literally uploading Storyline SCORM packages to our instance of Canvas (and have been all day so far) and came across this thread while I waiting for one of the files to upload. I haven't encountered this problem, though Canvas has graced me with other problems related to Storyline. :)

However, I was curious to see if I could replicate your issue, so I downloaded the test file you posted six months ago and then uploaded it through the SCORM tool in our Canvas. After the upload finished, I went straight to Assignments and clicked the link for your test course and it launched with no problem. (See the attached screenshot.) I was using the latest version of Firefox.

I know that doesn't resolve the issue for you, but at least did launch successfully in this one instance of Canvas

I did find a way to get the storyline file to play after all this however, the reporting is not working. I should note that I am using a Free for Teachers account, which does not have the SCORM app available.

This is what I ended up doing:

  1. Publish from Articulate
    • In Player options: uncheck “launch in new window” and check off “resize to fit window” (this allows the entire player to be visible when embedded in the Canvas page)
    • Publish to LMS (Scorm 1.2)
    • Download Zip File into local folder
  2. Upload to Canvas
    • In the course, create a new folder in course files, then upload the SCORM zip file
    • Create an assignment in Canvas, add file: Story.html

This allowed me to view the storyline file in the course and seems to avoid the issue that I was having launching it in another window. However, I just tested with a fake student account and this solution does not seem to allow for reporting.

Does anyone have any advice on getting the SCORM content to both play AND report in the Free for Teachers version of Canvas? I would be SO grateful!

Hi Sage,

I'm not familiar with this type of account, but is it not reporting in any environment or just the mobile? I know Canvas has it's own mobile player, and that's not one that we can support nor the specific LMS, so hopefully others in the community can share information on that specific app and account type for how it should behave.

If you're looking to confirm that the file works as expected I'd double check in a site such as SCORM Cloud which is an  industry standard for LMS testing and this article has a really good list of steps to go through.
