Error message when saving .story file, then corrupting!

Feb 28, 2018

Help! I've made edits to at least 3 different e-Modules in Storyline 360 over the past few days, and every time I try to save them, I get the following error message;

The project file could not be saved

Cannot access a disposed object
Object name: 'StoryPackage'

I then cancel the save, close the file in the hopes that my work has been recovered, but then Storyline can't open the file - I get the following message;

"This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of storyline"

I updated Storyline 360 today, but it hasn't made a difference.

I have a LOT of work I need to do on 10 different .story files over the next few weeks - please help!!!

Hey there, Wendy.  When this happens, it usually means that the project was touched or modified by another process while open in Storyline, and it often means that the file has become corrupt. Do you save your files on the C: drive, or do you use a network or shared drive, perhaps?

Possible sources of trouble include a lost connection to the storage device (network/external drive), antivirus scanner, automatic backup software, power options (turning off drive during screensaver), very long paths/filenames, low disk space, and more.  We have these tips to reduce the risk of corruption.

In the meantime, let's see if we can access an earlier version of your project, at least. Here's how to check:

  • Open this folder in Windows Explorer: Thuppdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  • Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
  • Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
  • Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Let me know how you make out!
