Evaluation of variables

I'm using a layered slide with buttons as a 'options slide' to allow the user to choose where to branch to other scenes. When these scenes are completed they user is returned to the 'options' slide. I need to reset the slide to its initial state to allow further to allow users to revist a scene they may already have visited. The problem I have is that I would like to play a short audio the first time the user visits the options slide but the fact that it has to be reset to the initial state means the audio also repeats. I've tried looking at variable but there seems to be only the option to trigger an event e.g. start the audio, if a variable changes.  Is there no way to run an 'If this value then run this event' type of sequence  ?
