Fill in the blank not working in Storyline

Mar 28, 2013

Hi!

I have a non-graded fill in the blank in my course.  When the learner answers corretcly it works perfectly, but when it is incorrect nothing happens - there is no incorrect pop-up even though it is there - and the user isn't moved further.  Any assistance you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Trisha

Hm, not sure what happened with your file, but when I first tried I saw the issue you discribed. Then I set the Number of attempts for the question to something other than Unlimited and from then on (even after I set it back to unlimited) it worked correctly, See attached file and let m eknow if it now works.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Trisha!

I've been looking at the file for a few minutes now and I couldn't figure out why the incorrect layer wasn't showing. It finally dawned on me that the question is set to "Unlimited" attempts. With this type of option selected for your question, you're not going to even see that layer. The layer that will be shown in this case is the "Try Again" layer.

I added content in the "Try Again" feedback for your question and it seems to be showing up quite well now.

If you want to see the incorrect layer, you'd need to set a specific amount of attempts for the question. Then, the learner would see the incorrect feedback, but that answer would actually be submitted as incorrect.

I'm attaching a modified version of the file, with the "Try Again" layer active.

Let me know if this works for you!

Thank you so much it works!

Do you mind if I ask you another question?  My team and I all use Storyline - we all love it but have issues with it being very slow to start up, save changes, and we frequently expereince it crashing.  Since we all have the same problems, we are making an assumption that it is our machines.  We have Dell lattitude laptops with i5 processors - with roughly 3G of memory available.  Throughout the day we are also running Outlook, Microsoft Office Communicator, and Internet Explorer.  There are times when we may be accessing other programs such as PowerPoint as well, but those three are staples.  We are hearing from our company's Marketing department that Macs are the way to go.  Do you hear much on this from others?

Hi Trisha!

Awesome, glad that's working now!

If you're using a PC, someone's going to tell you Macs are the way to go. If you're using a Mac, someone's going to tell you PCs are the way to go. It's pretty much a given :) One thing to keep in mind, however, is that there is no Mac version of Storyline. In order to run Storyline on a Mac, you'll need to do so using Parallels or a similar service.

Here's more information on that, just in case your company decides to make the "machine switch":

Using Storyline on a Mac

Now, for the problems you're currently experiencing, this is something we may be able to help with. It sounds like the same problems are popping up for multiple users. The first thing I would want to check is how you're working with the Storyline courses and when exactly you experience the crashing.

Are you working with local project files? If you're working from any external sources, this may cause some issues when you're working with files.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If you've confirmed you're working with local files, can you tell me when or how the software crashes? Do you receive any specific error messages, or are you attempting to perform a specific action (publishing, saving, etc.)?

So the two people on my team who use Storyline are 100% remote, so they VPN in.   I also work remotely sometimes.  I have noticed that that makes things work less well.   We are urged to work from Network drives and are in and out of oru shared driove (on the network) a lot for sharing/editing purposes.  And when I am in the office I am always on the network.  Does that make it worse?  I don't think there is an option around this - I need to be on the network to get email, office communicator, etc. We don't do the special characters or too long of a path, so I don't think that's it.  When I sent my issue into to Tech Support they told me to disable the security, anti-virus applications and firewalls, which is definitely not an option.  So an example of crashing occurred yesterday when I tried to copy and past a picture from Powerpoint - the whole thing crashed and my screen was gray for 45 minutes.  Then this morning when I fist started working it took 20 minutes to open - it showed that the application was open, but wouldn't take me to the individual course.  One of the people on my team has the same problems every time she tries to save.  Which as I think about it, sounds more and more like it is a network issue.  I am wondering if the best workaround would be a second machine that is just for developing and is not connected to the network?

Good morning Trisha,

Just to clarify, by working on a network I'm actually referring to the files being located on a network drive. I totally understand if you have more than one person that requires access to a file, or if you need to place the files there for storage. However, when you're modifying a course it's best to work on the local hard drive. So, say you need to update a project and those project files are on a network drive. Just move them over to your hard drive, modify them, save them and then you can place them back on the network drive.

Out of curiosity, are you running the most recent update for Storyline? I haven't seen many reports of the memory error since this was released, so I'm wondering if you might be running the older version. To find this information click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline". If you're not currently running version 2 (1212.1412), please download and install Update 2 from the link below:

Articulate Storyline - Download Update 2

I honestly don't think you should need to purchase or use a second machine for modifying Storyline courses. It sounds like your system should be fine, but if you want to review the minimum system requirements, I'll link to them below:

If the crashing and slow loading issues continue after checking all of that information, it may be best to try the troubleshooting steps outlined in the article below:

Unexpected or erratic behavior in Storyline

If you still have trouble running the software, we may need to take a closer look at what's happening. Please go ahead and contact our support team so we can work with you to improve the performance of the software.
