Flash projects not running on Internet Explorer

Jun 03, 2015

Hi,

We have several projects published in Storyline 1.8.1412.921 (I got that version from the meta.xml file). These have been working fine on various versions of IE as well as Chrome and FireFox up until yesterday, when IE stopped running the flash - now it just shows:

Nothing has changed... does anybody know what might be the cause? An IE or Flash update perhaps? Anyone else experienced this issue lately?

Many thanks for any insight  :)

Update... after further testing, it looks like there are more issues... here is a summary of the problems I am seeing with different browsers:

Apologies for the image; I couldn't insert a table.

I don't quite understand why these issues are cropping up now, as we have been using these training modules for about 12 months. Perhaps browser / Flash updates?

Anyway, if anybody is using version 2 of storyline successfully with all these browsers, or can recommend another fix/workaround, that would be greatly appreciated :)

IE11 and firefox are not supported browsers for HTML5 so expect your errors are related to this.

Not sure about your flash issues with IE, I have had lots of issues with running flash content on IE 11, if you use windows 8 this may help https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-issues-windows-8.html

Thanks Phil :)

I'm using Windows 7 but I checked the steps anyway - my flash plugin was enabled and activeX filter disabled. The spinner is actually running in flash.

Thanks for the tip for IE11 not supporting the HTML5 output (that's odd). I guess the next step is to try rebuilding our training modules and trying again.

Hi David,

The element with the YouTube videos may be connected to how they changed the API as described here.   Also you can see the supported browsers and devices for Flash and HTML5 here.

I personally haven't run into any issues with IE11, but I also don't use it that often. Did you check the Flash version each of the browsers are using? I like to use a site such as supportdetails.com to look into that.

Thanks for the pointers Ashley - that is a useful site. It shows that all the browsers are running Flash 17.0.-1

I can't find a date for when the Articulate page about the YouTube API change was published, but I'm guessing it was recent. I'm pretty sure we're not using version 2 of Storyline but I could be wrong.

I guess we'll just have to try republishing the modules, and if that doesn't work, upgrading to the latest Storyline.

thanks
David
