Hi Bruce! You can select a button and then use the button quick styles menu to switch to a different button shape as shown below (i.e., switch from a rectangular button to a oval button), but it's not possible right now to turn a button into a custom shape. Really the fastest way to do that would be to draw your custom shape and then use the Format Painter to copy the button's states & animations to the new shape; then you'd need to add whatever triggers you want on the new shape.
I would love it if the shapes available for buttons mimmicked the shapes available in the "Shapes" options, (except callouts and lines etc...that would just be silly....).
All reworked now using exactly the solution you suggested above.
