Freeform slides not being calculated in the LMS result

Aug 21, 2014

Hi,

In a recent lesson I created several drag and drop interactions and then assigned them to my result slide. The passing score was set to 100% and the submit result trigger was placed above the exit course trigger in the stack and triggered by pressing the exit button on the result slide. Several students have complained their LMS result is saying 93.3% and therefore not completing their lesson. I think I have run into this problem before.

Please advise if it true that Freeform Quiz slides, as they are not graded, will result in abnormal scores being communicated to the LMS and thus should not be added to the Result slide if needing to publish to an LMS?

It's a tricky one because on some occasions you might need students to print or review their results and if you remove it from the result slide they will not appear in the post review or the results report.

Hi David,

Freeform quiz questions can be graded, and you'll see information here in regards to the drag/drop set up. Survey questions are the ones that can't be graded.

I don't remember a similar issue like this, so I'd like to know a bit more about your set up and how these students are testing it? You mentioned it's only a few of your users, and I'm curious to know if they all exited the course in a certain way - maybe closed the browser instead of using the exit course trigger? Are the results submitted when the user visits the slide or clicks on the button?

Have you looked into testing your course outside of your LMS, in a site such as SCORM Cloud, which would allow you to see if the behavior is LMS specific?

Hi Ashley,

I have tested with Scorm Cloud and no problems were reported in the manifest. I have also now checked the drag and drop setting in each slide and they all have the default points value of 10 points. The other graded slides would have the same default value. Score by question is set for each quiz slide and the attempts are unlimited. I also uploaded a test scorm to my LMS and it seems to record a completion with a mixture of Freeform and Graded questions within the SCORM. This test SCORM was triggered to submit results the same way as the problematic SCORM in my LMS... (when you click the exit button on the result slide).

I designed this lesson so that it could be published in 3 categories for different personnel and containing relevant scenes in each category. This was achieved by creating 3 different result slides with different quiz slide selections for each. Scenes were excluded from a category by the navigation buttons being set to a disabled state. So when I publish I select the appropriate result slide from the publishing menu that matches the category.

This leads me to two final questions:

Will having more than one Result slide in a project be problematic?

Does the result slide selected in the publish menu automatically update the result slide in each quiz slide to match?

Hi David,

You can have more than one results slide, but you can only track one within your course and send those results to your LMS. If you have more than one results slide you'll need to choose which one to track when publishing. If for example, you'd like to provide a result after each quiz, you can do that and then set a master results slide which could track all of those prior. When you combine results slide, you'll have the following options:

  • User must pass each quiz: Each result slide in your course represents a quiz. Select this option if your users must pass each individual quiz to receive an overall passing result. In this scenario, if a user fails any single quiz in the course, then they fail the entire course.
  • Combine points from each quiz: Select this option if you want the scores from the selected result slides to be added together and re-evaluated as a single score. Then assign the appropriate Passing Score percentage. In this scenario, a user could fail one or more of the individual quizzes in the course and still pass the overall course as long as their cumulative score exceeds the passing score assigned here.

I'm not sure I understand your last question - you'd want to choose the results slide of the quiz you want to report out on, or the main results slide that will combine all quizzes.

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your advice. In regards to my last question, will the Result Slide selection (below) be updated automatically for each quiz slide...

...when the Result Slide to Report (see below) is changed in the Publish menu?

This normally happens with one result slide in a project but I am not sure whether multiple result slides will affect anything. I know when I look in the individual quiz slides' Result slide drop down list each result slide in the project is listed there correctly.

Does the software need to select a particular one on each quiz slide?

Hi David,

Thanks for the clarification. That will be updated if you update what slides are tracked from the results slide as shown here:

So if you add a new results slide, you'll want to choose the questions it tracks. If you're adding a results slide that tracks more than one results slide - the different results slides will appear as options and then still be associated with those individual questions. There is additional information here on using the Results slide.
