Hangman game – problem with triggering to slide layer

Apr 28, 2016

Hello.  Question slides 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 are going to the “game over” layer as soon as one incorrect letter is chosen; however, the person should have 10 chances…so it should not go to the game over layer until person has made 10 incorrect letter choices.  When the question slides are viewed individually, they work correctly…it is when the entire scene is viewed that 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 do not work correctly.  In case it is helpful for someone taking a look at the attached .story file, the correct answers to the question slides are: MEDICAL (slide 1.2), RIGHTS (slide 1.3), EMOTIONAL (slide 1.4), DOCUMENTATION (slide 1.5) and FEEDBACK (slide 1.6).

Any help is much appreciated!  I’ve tried for hours to figure it out.

Hi Kimberly,

Great job on this game. You have lots of good triggers and variables. Love the audio that went along with it.

I think your issue was that you didn't reset your variable IncorrectGuessesVar for each slide. I added a trigger to set IncorrectGuessesVar to 0 for each slide.

I think it solved your issue. Have a look.

One other tip, Trigger Order matters, especially when you have so many on the slide. I take the time to ensure the slide triggers occur first and everything happens in a logical order. I am not sure if it was a factor here but it is a good rule to consider.

Mike,

Thanks so much!  It works perfectly and I really appreciate the feedback…it will help me with future projects.  I can’t take all the credit…I got the start of the idea from Gavin Innes post (https://community.articulate.com/e-learning-examples/storyline-2-advanced-hangman-game). He created and uploaded a 1-question hangman slide.  I just took it from there, made some modifications /additions and then – thanks to you, got it working with more than 1 question slide.  I am going to upload it to E-Learning Heroes so that others can use it too.

Hi, Kimberly -- Glad to hear that Mike was able to provide the assistance you needed! And in addition to examples already shared here, I thought I might stop in to pass along a few others hangman-related posts for others who may be interested:

Hope that helps! :)
