HELP! Cannot publish content

Mar 20, 2013

I am on a 30 day trial of Articulate Storyline and just spent DAYS putting together a presentation and now cannot publish it. I have tried "publish to web" and I save it to my computer in various files and locations and no one else can open it but me. I can send it to people and they are unable to open it. What do I need to do?

Hi Rachel, welcome to the community

Can you tell us exactly what you're hoping to do? Are you just wanting to send people a link to your published course so that they can view it online? If so, you'll need to upload it to a website, or use a temporary solution like Tempshare.

If you're trying to send people the entire published content folder, you might want to try zipping after the publishing finishes, and remind them to unzip the file completely before opening it.

Hi Rachel. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

You published to Web and the output files were created successfully, correct? But you're trying to share the published files with others? Are you trying to share the published content with others, or are you wanting to share the project files so that others can modify it?

If you're wanting to distribute your course and share it with others, please make sure that you're uploading the course to a web server or LMS. If you don't have access to either of these, you'll want to publish for CD and send those files to others.

If you view published Storyline content on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.
To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review the following article for details:
If you're wanting to share the project files so that others may modify the course, you'll want to share only the .STORY file, so they can work with it in Storyline.
If this isn't what you're trying to do, or if you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks!

Peter==I have seen that tutorial and that does not help. When I go to "publish" and click "for web" and save it to my computer then I attach that file to an email and the people I send it to cannot open it. It opens for them in a website but with just 2 words on the screen "back" and "next" that's it--no images, no presentation. I am just saving it to my desktop, do I have to save it to a website? I am so confused. Is there a phone # I can call for a tutorial help?

Hi Rachel,

The recipients of your emailed course are running into local security restrictions from the Flash Player and their web browsers. You or they will need to upload the published content to a web server to view it properly. Or, if you'd prefer to view it locally, as they have been, you'll need to publish to CD and open the course using the Launch_Story.exe file that Storyline creates.

The article that Christine linked to above explains exactly what you'll need to do to prevent running into local security restrictions.

The easiest and simplest way to get a course online in a hurry is to use Tempshare. It will host your content for free and give you a unique URL which you can share with others for 10 days, after which it will be automatically deleted.

Let us know if you'd like additional assistance here, or if you're interested in using our fee-based phone support.

Hi Rachel!

The .EXE file is generated when you publish to CD from Storyline. This is one of the files that's included when/if you burn the project to a CD. If you want to run the course without burning to CD, then you would want to launch the .EXE file.

Yes, tempshare only holds the files for so many days. You can't move it really from tempshare, but you can always upload the content to your own URL/web host at any point from Storyline.

Let us know if you have any other questions

Thanks!

Rachel,

If you're wanting to place the content on a website, you do not need to burn the content to a CD. This method was simply suggested in case you want to test the content locally.

Do you have a webmaster, or web team you can work with for uploading the content to the site? If so, you would need to publish for the web and share the output with the web team so they can place it on the website.

Take a look at the following tutorial for more information:

Hi Rachel,

After publishing your course (using Publish for Web option), do any of the following:

  • Use the FTP button on the Publish Successful dialog to upload the published files to a web server.
  • Or, use your own FTP client to upload the published files to a web server.
  • Or, give the published files to your server administrator to upload to a web server.

When your published files have been uploaded to a web server, provide users with the URL for the story.html file.

Here is a video tutorial:

I tried to attach the EXE file to an email and my work email and even GMAIL will not allow it--it says that those types of files are not allowed to be sent. HOw am I supposed to do it then? I just need to be able to send it VIA EMAIL to someone else. Or to save it to a drive and let someone else open it on their computer. I only have 4 days left on my trial--this is very upsetting, as I definitely will not purchase the product if I cannot even get my presentation saved! Please help me!

Hi Rachel,

Sorry to hear you're still working with this. I had hoped everything worked out for you.

Emailing .EXE files from certain email types may cause issues, or it may be an issue with your Anti-virus. Also, you'll need to send more than just the .EXE file.

Have you tried zipping the file and emailing it?

After publishing, do any of the following to share it with others. (Note: Double-click the Launch_Story.exefile in the published output to view the course.)

  • Burn the published output to a CD.
  • Burn the published output to a DVD.
  • Copy the published output to a USB drive.
  • Zip the published output, and copy it to a network drive. (Users must extract the zip file before viewing.)
  • Zip the published output, and email it directly to users. (Users must extract the zip file before view

So, here's the steps you'll want to take:

1) Publish the course for CD.

2) Once you see the successful publish prompt, select the option to "Zip" the course.

3) You'll see a prompt open that will allow you to save the zipped file in a specific folder or location. For easy access, you may want to save this zipped file on your desktop.

After following these steps, you should be able to email the zipped files to your colleagues. Once they receive the email, they will need to extract the files before viewing them.

I hope this helps!

Rachel,

It depends on what operating system and what software they're using for compressed files. With some versions of Windows, all they'll need to do is right-click the zip file and select "Extract", copy all of the files and paste them outside of the .ZIP file, or they'll need to use a third-party program to extract the files.

Since I can't see their system, or possibly know what software they're using for compressed files, all I can do is give some suggestions. WinZip is a very well known program for unzipping compressed files.  If they aren't already using a program like this, they can download the program from the following site:
