Help with random question bank draw
Jan 16, 2015
I've been trying to develop a project for the eLearning Challenge, but I've hit a wall. I was wondering if someone on this forum could help me out.
Here’s the link to the course:

The “game” basically uses a random question bank draw so that the learner can guess the note of a key on the keyboard. Afterwards, they get a feedback screen that gives them the option to end the game or try again. The problem I’m having is that every time I go back to the keyboard, I get the same question. What I want is a different random question every time I come back to keyboard.
Any ideas about how I can make this happen?
Thanks in advance,
Christian

Hi Christian
have you checked the setup of your QB
I tried that, but I still get the same question every time I return to the quiz slide, rather than a random one.
BTW, I'm using Storyline 1.
Do you want to load the .story file rather than the published file to take a look.
I've been editing a number of SL1 projects using large question banks that randomly select and no issues.
Here you go:

This is slightly different from the file I used to do the output... I changed the settings to what you suggested, but still have the same issue.
Thanks for having a look!
Hey Christian
just having a look at the file.
You have a try again button on each question which means it keeps looping, but the question option setup has 1 attempt only - I think this might be an issue.
Let me know what the rules should be and I'll take another look
I tried changing the attempts to unlimited, but I'm having the same issue, it keeps returning to the same question. Also, I'm not really fond of the pop-up window that says "try again"
Hi Christian,
Thanks for sharing your .story file here. There isn't a way to force a question bank to give a new questions each time or treat it as a brand new draw. If you're looking to use the question bank set up, what about setting up those Right/wrong slides using the normal Feedback slides for correct/incorrect? That way you'd be able to continue through the question bank slides normally with the built in jump to next slide trigger, and you could also include your "end" trigger.
Thanks Ashley, I actually came to a similar conclusion myself.
It also looks like there may be a way to force the question bank to give a new draw by using a feedback screen, but I haven't played with this yet.
Sounds good Christian - and please let us know if you need anything else.
If I have a quiz set to retry 3 times, could I create new scenes with the same question banks in order to get a new draw for each retry? So I would set a variable of 1 for each failing results slide - I think.
Hi Robyn,
Are you going to link to the same draw slide or are you going to duplicate the question bank and point users to the duplicate if they choose to retry? The latter set up would ensure you get new questions (or at least always re-randomize....they may see the same questions as it's random) but you'll need to track all the quizzes and question banks in terms of sending the results to your LMS. You may want to share a bit more information about what you're looking to set up here so that the community could weigh in with some other ideas or examples on what to do.
