hotspot state mousover trouble

May 26, 2016

Hello. New Storyline user. Just learning the ropes. I took a crack at the first elearning challenge (comparison) to try to practice some of the things I am learning in the getting started series. Anyway I am stuck on this hotspot issue. I made a hotspot that when the mouse is hovered over it changes the state of a picture to show information. I want the other pictures to be grayscale 60% transparency, but I am getting base layer items "bleeding" through and am not sure why. I set up another option where I add another trigger that hides the other pictures and that solved that problem but then they don't reappear and after all items have been moused over, the slide is blank. I did check, and they are all set to reappear after mouse over is complete. Not sure where I am going wrong. I have attached the story files so if anyone wants to help a rookie out, I would appreciate it. Great to be a part of this active community!

Hi Martin,

Thanks for reaching out here and welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community!

I took a look at your slide and it seems there are a lot of things cluttering it up that may be what you're seeing. So I'm going to try to describe what I saw and perhaps you can share any other details about the set up to help us figure out a method for you.

It looks like you've added the change to the info state to show the additional greyed out set up - but those states seem to include all the aircraft and not just the one you're hovering over - so they're still semi showing through even though it seems you've also set them up to be in the hidden state?  You also mentioned the base layer, and I see your second slide has a layer included but not triggers to show that layer? Could you share a bit more about that set up and use?

Oh dear! I saved the two slides that were troublesome out of the project and pasted them in a new project and the dimensions are now all out of whack. I didn't expect that.  I am so sorry. What a mess! I have updated it with the new dimensions, and got it back to where I was having the problem. I have attached that file below.

Thank you for your response and your patience.  I was trying to recreate something like one of the examples provided in the first elearning challenge:

 http://www.estadao.com.br/infograficos/tapuiassauro-o-novo-dinossauro-do-brasil,ciencia,280832

On the second tab they have dinosaurs, moused over the others go to a transparent state and you get some information about that dinosaur.

My problem was, if I do a mouseover on one of the planes the others stayed in normal state unless I built a new state with all the planes, 3 being in grayscale 60% and the "main" plane being in the normal state colors with information.

In the first slide the background image is showing through, the grayscale images in the info state are not covering them up.

In the second slide my idea is working as planned, but everything disappears after all planes have been moused over.

Sorry I didn't delete the slide layer. I was experimenting with the idea of having the plane, when moused over would show a layer, but that wasn't working either.

Maybe I am missing a much easier way to build this.

Again, I appreciate your time. Thank you.

Thanks Martin for letting me take a look at your file. With Storyline there are a number of different ways to accomplish things, so my solution may just be how my brain sees it and not work for you - but perhaps it'll give you some other ideas.

Instead of adding additional grey/transparent planes to the states - I just created a "grey" state for each of them. Based on where the user is hovering, the state of the plane they're on will change to the "hover" state and they'll see the info. All the others are set to change to the "grey" state. So depending on which item you're looking at - they may overlap a bit - because there is no way to send them all to the back. It was a bit easier for me to understand this way though. I only updated the first slide and made the triggers for the two bottom planes as you'll see.
