How are web objects viewed by browsers?

May 15, 2014

Hi guys,

Quick question for the community - do browsers treat all web objects as if they were a popup? Here's the situation I have:

We have a course being tested by our LMS group, and when they hit a screen where we have included a web object that displays our feedback survey in the course (inserted as a web object, to display on the slide), the testers are receiving a "page cannot be displayed" error. I can see how the web object would be treated as a popup if I set the property to display in a new window, but when I display the web object on the slide (which is the case here), does the browser still treat it like a popup?

If the browser treats all web objects (whether they are displayed on the slide or in a new window) as popups, then I know it's the popup blocker in the browser stopping this. Otherwise, I'm stumped.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

I don't believe that it would treat it as a pop up while within the slide itself, but there are a few known reasons here  on why the web object wouldn't display when viewing the published output. You may also want to try different browsers to see if you're able to isolate the issue to one specific browser and to help rule out any LMS issues you could test it at SCORM Cloud as well, which is an industry standard for testing SCORM content.

Thanks Ashley! We only use one browser here (corporate standard is IE 9, unfortunately), so multiple browsers shouldn't be a factor.

We did have a tester say that they saw the popup blocker message appear on one test system, and when he allowed the popup it worked. However, on a different test system, the popup blocker had different settings (block all popups), so no warning/error message appeared. We'll have to work with IT now to see how they have the popup blocker configured in their standard image, and see if we can't reset any user configurations to include the LMS as an acceptable domain to launch popups from.

Thanks for you reply!
