How do I get survey results?

Jun 19, 2016

I am relatively new to Storyline, but can't work out how to see survey results.

I want to ask several questions of users of a course, to build up a better understanding of their needs.

But when I put in a results page, all I get is basically - thanks, or you passed.  No information as to their responses. When I put the package into my LMS (Moodle), I get a report showing who's completed the survey - but again, no survey results.

How do I get to the survey data????

Hi David!

Are you wanting to allow the user to review the survey results via the result slide options?

Check out the sample file attached.

As far as being able to have your LMS report on survey data, that is dependent on the LMS and my understanding is that it may not work in all.

Hi David!

It is up to your LMS in the option to provide reports with individual answers - and each LMS is different in terms of what they can report out on and how it'll be displayed for you.

As a point of reference, here is the quiz data sent to your LMS and if your LMS is unable to display the data needed, you may want to use a method such as Survey Monkey or even a Google Form that you could embed as a web object.

Any compilation would be independent of the Storyline software.

Hopefully someone in the community will be able to chime in and assist if they've accomplished this.

Hi George,

Sorry to hear that you feel this feature is useless. Are you having trouble tracking your survey results within your LMS?

Articulate Storyline is designed primarily as an e-learning development tool to be used in conjunction with Articulate Online or your own learning management system (LMS) and does not offer tracking.

I shared above that it is up to the LMS in how they report on this data.

Hi there, Helen!  Sounds like you aren't seeing survey answers from your course hosted in Moodle.  Storyline sends learner responses to your LMS, and that will include survey questions.  To make sure I know how to help, let me confirm a few steps!

  • Add survey question slides and a results slide that tracks each question.
  • Publish for LMS, and use SCORM 2004 to include question text.
  • Upload your content, and test reporting.  You should be able to click on your learners' attempts and see something similar to this shot in Moodle:

I'm not a Moodle expert, but I believe your learners will have to be registered for you to track their responses.  Guest access does not track learner information.

Let me know what you're seeing on your end, and I'll be happy to help!

Hi Crystal, thanks for getting back so promptly. Yes I have followed all those steps. Ive posted many assessments onto our academy site so am very familiar with the set-up. I’m trialling a small Moodle site with a number of my delegates and they’ve all completed an assessment from Storyline which does show all the interactions. I then did an evaluation survey and uploaded in the same way, but it just said when I clicked Interactions ‘Nothing to see’.

Welcome, Ted!

Storyline will communicate survey data, but it is up to the LMS on how it will be handled and reported. If you have a Survey Results Slide with the survey questions you want reported to the LMS along with the tracking set to that Results Slide, you should get the data you're looking for.

Also: By enabling LMS debug mode, you can see the data that gets passed from Storyline to your LMS; however, the suspend_data string in an LMS debug log isn't human-readable since it is compressed to allow for more robust storage.

If you'd like extra eyes on your set-up and debug log, our Support team can assist! With your permission, they'll review the .story file and will delete it after having a close look.

Let me know if I'm off-base here, as I'm also happy to help!

Hi Katie,

My vendor was actually missing the setting when pubilishing and tracking results. They were only selecting the number of pages viewed rather than selecting the option below that to complete on the results of the quiz. Setting that option sends the interaction data through to the LMS.

It confused everyone, because of the term "Quiz" it was a survey, so it did not register to think of it as a quiz.

All fixed! Thanks for the reply!
