How does Rise handle Storyline blocks with large file sizes

Sep 19, 2023

Hi everyone, hoping someone has the answer to this one.

I need to build a Storyline block that contains 9 short videos, although the learner will only view one of them. The base layer will have 9 thumbnails representing different scenarios and the learner chooses the one that fits them best. This will then trigger the relevant video layer. The total file size of the 9 videos is around 200mb, each one around 20mb.

My question is around how Rise will handle a Storyline block that large. Will it load the entire block and therefore take a long time before the learner sees anything, or will it load the base layer relatively quickly and then only load the video content as it's selected?

Thanks Rowan

Hello Rowan,

Happy to help!

Storyline 360 preloads slides to make the content load faster. This article explains how the embedded Storyline 360 block will load its contents when added to your Rise 360 course:

Storyline's streaming video feature should allow the videos to load without any buffering regardless of internet speed, but of course, the best way to be certain would be to test how your course actually behaves in an environment designed for hosting content. Here's how you can test your course in SCORM Cloud to view its performance, or here's how to publish to Review 360 if you prefer to test in a web server like environment.

Hi Joe, thanks for your quick reply.

I've looked at the article you linked and it has great info about how Storyline loads content, thank you. Because it's a branched interaction and I'm trying to stop the unnecessary preloading of videos that the learner might never play, it looks like if I put them all on separate slides, instead of separate layers of the one slide, that will limit Storyline to only preloading three of them.

Thanks, Rowan
